Mom diagnosed with multiple myeloma

Hi. I am new to this forum. I live in London UK and just found out my mom who lives in Canada has just been diagnosed with stage 3 multiple myeloma .  She is only 69 years old. What hurts me the most is that my dad had the same cancer 10 years ago and passed away 7 months after diagnosis .  I feel so helpless as I am so far away. I will go to meet her with my kids this Christmas .

  • Hi there Lily, welcome to the forum, but so sorry to hear about your Mom. Your post caught my eye when I read that your Mom lives in Canada as that is where I live. I am a bit older than your Mom, but what is age when one has this terrible disease. I know it must be so difficult for you being so far away from your Mom at this time. What part of Canada does your Mom live? I live in Atlantic Canada. Did you live here when you were young?

Even though we always think that a diagnosis of cancer automatically means a death sentence, it is not always the case, at least not immedicately. Now, there is so much more known about cancer and people are living a lot longer with it than we used to. I hope your Mom has lots of time left.

Write back and let us know how your Mom is doing.

    Take care.

  • Hi. I lived in Edmonton Alberta for 20 years. Then moved to Vancouver for 7 years. Then I got married in London UK and have been living here for 16 years now. My mom lives with my brother in Surrey BC. She has been through 4 chemotherapy treatments now but seems to be getting worse and going downhill . She is in immense bone pain all the time and is basically in bed all the time .  I feel so helpless and worried all the time as I  am so far away and cannot go to see her that often due to family responsibilities here .  I am going to see her for Christmas though . God willing . I am so confused as to whether she will get more worse or better ?  I lost my dad after few months with same cancer . I can't bear to lose her soon. I need her. However I don't want her to suffer in so much pain all the time. Please pray she doesn't leave me soon.

  • Thank you so much !  I will look him up. I'll try to stay strong.

  • When were you diagnosed ?  What type of cancer do you have ?
