Hello tonsil cancer!

Hi my name is Melissa I am 43 with a husband, 2 kids 4 grand kids that has been diagnosed with carcinoma of the oropharynx and cancer of the lingual tonsil which I believe to be basically the same. Back in March I noticed a mass on my left tonsil not to big and went to my PCP which she said you have tonsillitis take these antibiotics then it will go away. Well at the time I was dealing with another umbilical hernia so I didn't worry about the mass just took the antibiotics. May comes around the mass is a little bigger but still I ignore it. Then September comes and by now I'm waking up gagging on this mass with a hard time swallowing too. Also I start to notice no matter what I'm so fatigued and taking naps which I don't do. After weeks of fighting with my insurance I finally saw an ENT who did a scope that day and was very alarmed by what he saw plus the pictures I had shown him of how much it grew. I saw him on a Monday he did a biopsy that Wednesday where he determined it was in fact cancer.

I live in Texas so I was immediately referred over to MD Anderson where I saw a head and neck surgeon for oncology. She did a scope too then has referred me to several oncologist all in a team. I have recently had a ct and pet scan showing I have cancer in my tonsil, base of my tongue and lymph node all mostly on the left side but have seen a couple small spots on the right. Tomorrow more appointments then the team of doctors will meet to see what is the best plan of action. So far I have been told radiation and chemotherapy.

I joined because I want to talk to people who are experiencing the same thing and know how this is very scary. I hope I didn't say to much for an introduction. Thank you for listening and I hope to make some friends on here that know  what this feeling is like being told you have cancer.

  • Hello sweetheart, Sorry to hear about your prognosis. My husband was diagnosed nearly a year ago with tonsil cancer, like you he went to his doctor with a lump in his throat and given antibiotics which didn't work, so he went back to the doctor who sent him to the hospital within 2 weeks and given the news of tonsil cancer. He has since had the operation and had 6 weeks of radiotherapy, it was not an easy ride! He had his operation on the 17.12.2015 we are nearly a year on, and his health is a lot better. Im not going to lie its not an easy ride you are on, but positive thinking and good family will pull you thru as it did ours. You will get thru this Mellisa just believe in the power of positive thinking. Will be thinking about you.

  • Hi Melissa

sorry to hear your husbands diagnosis and I definitely know how youre feeling. My husband was diagnosed with tonsil cancer on the 8th December last year with no symptoms other than a lump in the right side of his kneck that appeared. He had 5 cycles of chemo, 30 radiotherapy VMAT sessions plus a kneck dussection and hes now in remission. I wont lie and say tbe treatment was easy because at times it was trully terrible but you will get through it. Keep positive, talk to each other and be honest about how you're feeling. Except help from family amd freinds and above all love each other. Wishing you lisds of luck and if I can help in any way then please  contact me xxx

    best wishes xx

  • To tonsil cancer patients; I am 77 years old and had tonsil surgery and radiation 4 1/2 years ago? Lost my taste and will to eat for about 2 to 4 months and lost about 80 lbs. which was probably needed anyway. I am in better shape now because of it. Over a gradual period of time I got most of my taste back except I do not enjoy sweets of any kind. Also I cannot tolerate anything hot and spicy. The biggest problem I had was lack of saliva at night causing me to wake up every 1 1/2 to 2 hours. I week ago a friend gave me a package of mouth pills called XyliMelts. You put one or two in you mouth at bedtime and they stick to your teeth or gums. I only got up once the first night. A miracle. You can also use them in the daytime which I don't need. You will survive. Just give it time and don't lose faith. Good luck.
