Waiting for surgery

Hello I'm Amanda. I was diagnosed with DCIS last month after my first routine mastectomy. I had another mastectomy, needle biopsy and ultrasound and was informed I have DCIS and have my mastectomy with recon booked 3rd November.

I'm very grateful for the breast screening programme we have in the UK. I live half my time in USA where I cannot even get health insurance as a foreigner. This is one of the main reasons I don't want to live there permanently.  I love the NHS and cannot fault my team in the slightest.

I would like to chat with anyone who has gone through this alone - my fiancé is sadly still in the USA and so cannot be with me at this time. I have a huge support network but would prefer to battle the recovery and reconstruction on my own actually.

Does anyone have any advice? I have my pinny, V pillow, exercise sheet... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Welcome to the forum Amanda although I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis and the reason it brings you here.

I'm really sorry your fiance can't be with you whilst you wait for your surgery but you've come to a great place with lots of friendly and supportive people. Many members who have been in the same or similar situation to yourself will know what you're going through right now and I'm sure they will post soon to offer their support and advice on how best to prepare and what to take with you.

Our cancer nurses may also be able to help. You can call them on 0808 800 4040 - which is free from a UK landline - Monday - Friday between 9a.m-5p.m.

Good luck for your surgery next week Amanda, we'll be thinking of you. And if you get a chance at any point do come back and let us know how you got on.

    All the best,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
