Appendix cancer

hi there. In June I had an emergency appendectomy for peritonitis. Histology revealed a malignant tumour in the removed appendix. In August I underwent a cytoreduction with HIPEC (hot Intraperitoneal chemotherapy). Two parts of my bowel, uterus, Fallopian tubes, ovaries, omentom were removed and stripping of the paracolic gutters, then the abdomen was filled with heated chemotherapy and left for an hour. A huge op which took 7 hours. Histology revealed tumours on the outside of the descending colon. Although all the cancer has been removed because of the secondary tumours I have been advised to have systemic chemotherapy. I am eight weeks post op, and although recovering really well I am scared silly about the chemotherapy.

My cancer is rare and I would really like to hear from anyone who has been through the same and come out the other side. I am aged 66.

  • Hello Marras,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. Poor you a 7 hour operation! I am pleased to hear that despite everything you have been through you are recovering well from this major surgery.

It is normal to be worried about starting chemotherapy and  I hope you will hear from some of our members who have been through it before and who will be happy to share their experience with you.

As your cancer is very rare and you may have some questions about your treatment, do feel free also to ring our cancer nurses on this free number 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. They are very friendly and will be able to guide you and answer questions you may have.

We have had threads in the past on Cancer Chat from members who have been affected by appendix cancer which you are welcome to respond to if you wish. CD posted in January to share his partner's story here.

More recently, [@Halyel]‍  posted just a few days ago to share her own cancer of the appendix experience. You can read Halyel's thread here .

I hope you will soon get chatting with others who have been through this before.

    Best wishes,

    Lucie, Cancer Chat Moderator
