Will my dad suffer ????

Dad has been told today his potassium levels are 8.2.  He has prostate cancer which has spread to his chest bone and his intestines.  He was diagnosed 8 years ago.  He has refused to go into hospital for the treatment, after a long discussion with my mom.  They couldn't canulate him last week and the doctor has said the treatment for high potassium wouldn't help in the long run.  He hasn't been told how long he has left, but I wondered if anyone else has been through this, would mind telling me will he suffer, as he is already in pain.  It breaks my heart to see him like this.  He is 68.

  • Hello CMax,

    Welcome to Cancer Chat.

I’m very sorry to hear about your dad and can totally understand how concerned you are.

I always find that it helps a bit to talk to people who can relate to us and hopefully you will have the chance to chat with our lovely members who will know exactly what you're going through at the moment and can share their experiences with you.

    Best wishes,

  • Sorry for the delay in replying to your kind words, but things took a dramatic change on the next day 13/08/16. I went over to visit my parents and my father was quite ill. Things progressed so quickly that on 14/08/16 the rapid response team with the local Hospice at home became involved. They were fantastic, they organised carers four times a day. Not that they got to do much as my mother and I have both experience in the care industry. So Mom and myself were doing basically all the care for my father. The Hospice at Home sent night sitters for us, so that we could get some sleep. Which of course we didn't, but they were fantastic. Unfortunately my father passed away on 18/08/16. He went peacefully listening to his country and western music with my mom and me at his bedside. I still can't believe he's gone and at the moment I prefer to be thinking of him just sleeping upstairs in his bed. So in answer to my own initial question, No he did not suffer. Thank you for taking the time to contact me. Best Wishes to you
  • Hello CMax,

Thank you for taking the time to come back on the forum and let us know the sad news of your dad's passing. Our sincere condolences on behalf of the Cancer Chat team. It is nice to hear that your dad didn't suffer, that the hospice staff were so supportive and that he went peacefully surrounded by his loved ones listening to the music he liked so much.

    Best wishes,
