Hi,

Hi everyone, I was diagnosed with BC and had a mastectomy last week, I was offered to have a reconstruction as the same time as the mastectomy, but turned it down, I have felt fine since the op and not really needed any pain meds.

Today I had my post-op check up in which the 1 drain I had was removed, but tonight I actually feel tight round where my boob was and under my arm and it's looking slightly red, warm and little swollen, is this normal?

I have been doing the 4 exercises, 4 times a day you are given before the drain is removed and this afternoon started on the 5th, which I felt I did OK, I didn't over stretch as it felt weird not having the dressings on (this is the first time I've ever been poorly, let alone have a op, so I know it sounds silly but was frightened I would pop open)

  • Hello Craftynanny,

I belong to the nurse enquiry team. Our moderator, Lucie asked us to have a look at your post in case there was anything we could say.

You probably already know that warmth, redness and swelling can be a sign of infection. So because of this and if it hasn’t settled down, I think you probably need to get someone to take a look at your armpit to be on the safe side in case there is an infection brewing.  I am not sure if you have a community nurse checking on the wound, if not the GP or the practice nurse at the surgery could check it out for you.

When wounds are closed at the end of an operation they are sewn up in several layers so it would be very unlikely to pop open, but I can’t say it is something that has never happened so it isn’t such a silly idea.

I am sorry I can’t be more helpful but hope you can get this sorted out and everything is okay.

    Take care,

    Julia

  • Thank you for your help Julia, I think it might have been the shock of the drain being removed as the redness and warmth seemed to subside after a few days, I still have quite a build up of fluid and little tighness there but am slowly working through the exercises that I were given. Can you thank Lucie for passing on my post to you, it's very much appreciated :) xx
