The beginning

Hi everybody!

My name is Shawna and I am 19 years old. I am new to this website and wanted to try it out. My mom was just diagnosed with lung cancer. We dont know what stage or what type of lung cancer yet ; She will be doing a biopsy sometime soon. I have never dealt with anything as heartbreaking as going to the appointments after praying to the Lord it was some type of mistake and it is no mistake whatsoever. I dont like expressing myself about how I feel to anyone so I have been lashing out to the people I need to depend on most during this time. I try my best not to snap at people because I know they're trying to help  but it just happens.. I dont know how to cope with something like this because my mother is my ONLY parent. Any suggestions?

  • Hi Shawna,

The first news is always hard to take in and it's understandable to breakdown in front of people you are closest too as you try and deal with the initial diagnosis.  It's worth saying straight away that there are an increasing amount of success stories with cancer treatments, and at this early stage you must take things a day at a time, be strong for each other, and not allow your mind to wander into thinking the worst.

Try not to bottle things up and be open with people, talk things over, take a friend to one side, that way they will be prepared for when you are really struggling and understanding when you 'snap' at them, and it will be easier for you to relieve some emotions.  Of course by all means come back to the forum whenever you need to.

    We're here for you.

    Steve.

  • I will try to express myself more.

    Thank you Steve.
