breast cancer

Hi all, my wife has breast cancer and is going through her treatment soon, is there anybody who can tell me any side effects from radiotherapy as i am a bit green at times on this subject,

  • Hi there, sorry to see your wife is going though a tough time at the moment but you sound very supportive and that must be a great comfort for her. It is totally understandable that you are a bit sideswiped by everything at the moment, I am sure it feels like you are both caught up in some horrendous whirlwind but hang on in there and things will calm down for you both. To answer your question, everyone reacts differently to having radiotherapy but generally speaking the treatment itself is fairly easy to get through. Most people find they get increasingly tired as the sessions go on, not helped by having to go back and forth every day for what is essentailly a 10 minute zap. The skin in the treated area will start to redden like sunburn (mine started at the begining of the second week) and I would suggest Sandra starts using a good moisturiser at least twice a day before, during and well after the treatment is over. She will find that she will go on "cooking" after the sessions have finished and this will most likely be when she feels the effects most. I used Diprobase and also 100% Aloe Vera and my hospital recommened E45 (I found this a little too harsh for my particular skin type) but anything that keeps the skin from getting dry is good. The staff at the treatment centre will keep an eye on how she is doing on a daily basis and she should have a review meeting half way through to see how she is getting on. I wish Sandra all the very best for her treatment and do let us know how things go.  Take care  Sue x
