Secondary melanoma

Hi  - my mum has been diagnosed with secondary melanoma afer 10 years from a melanoma on her arm. It has spread to her breast but this is being treated with tablets as only low grade.  She found a lump under her arm which was 8cm in February and had this removed in April along with all the nymph nodes. Out of the eighteen removed only one had cancer cells. She is now due for radiotherapy in the next two weeks.. A course of 20 treatments. We are a close family and she does talk about her illness but I feel I dont know enough as don't want to bombard her with questions. I am also away on holiday for three weeks of her treatment and feel so guilty not there for her even though my sister will be here and other members of the family. My mum is very independent and very positive but as my dad says she hides it well. Sometimes I do feel she is not telling us all the facts and protecting us.

  • Welcome to the forum Lulu.

I'm sorry to hear about your mum's diagnosis but she did the right thing by getting herself checked when she found the lump under her arm and it's also really good that she feels comfortable talking about what she is going through.

I noticed you said you don't know much about your mum's illness and don't want to bombard her with questions. It's understandable that you might not want to ask too much and overwhelm her at this point so I thought this article on our website might help. It also has information on secondary melanoma which I thought might be useful to you.

Also, if there is anything you are unsure of and might not understand then you can always speak to our nurses. If you are based in the UK you can call them for free on 0808 800 4040 and they are available between 9a.m-5p.m, Monday - Friday.

    I hope this helps.

    Kind Regards,
