Hi, my mum was diagnosed with lung cancer and its in her lymph nodes aswell. In March that's all we have been told they said they can't operate because of her age and because she is too fragile. She had a brain scan but they said no cancer there we just swollen lesions that they don't intend to do anything about.  They won't even do a biopsy as they say it's unfair to put her through the stress of that...so what I really wanted to know was how long mum might have.Mum doesn't want chemo she said just let it take its course. Other a few things going on with mum especially with her memory I feel like I have been left in limbo because the dr has said he doesn't really need to see her just let her gp do that. I just want to know how quick it may grow.

  • Welcome to our forum Sath,

I am sorry to hear about your mum. Things must be so tough for you at the moment. Feel free to give our nurses a ring on this free number if you are based in the UK 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. It may do you some good to talk to them.

I am sure other members of our forum will be along shortly to share their thoughts with you on your mum's situation.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Sath

I'm so sorry to read that your mum has been diagnosed with this awful disease. I hope you find some answers from the nurses. I lost my husband to lung cancer 8 months ago. The tests can be quite grueling even for a strong person and evenues with interventions and treatments there's no guarantee of a positive  impact.

In my husbands case we decided we didn't want to know how long he had left. In my (fairly limited) experience I would just say that doctors aren't God's. I've spoken to lots of people who have had loved ones with lung cancer or have had lung cancer themeselves. Their experiences have all been very different. There's no 'one size fits all' prognosis.  I hope I'm not speaking out of turn on this forum when I suggest that maybe the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation could give you more specific guidace.  I've found them to be very helpful.

Wishing you and your mum much love

  • Thank you,my dad had lung cancer in 2009 and had it cut out he was lucky to survive and didn't have to have any follow up treatment but mum is older and a lot weaker and is refusing treatment.
