Advice for brother who has bowel/liver cancer

Hi I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right place!

hi everyone.  I'm posting to try and get some help and advice for my brother.  He was diagnosed with bowel cancer about two and a half years ago.  He has had his bowel removed (has a stoma).  Unfortunately the cancer has spread to his liver.  Recently he's been experiencing a lot of pain (possibly trapped wind) in the area around the stoma and says the pain is excruciating.   He says the pain is like a pulsating one and the area under his stoma gets quite hot and tender .

We've tried peppermint tea, laxatives eliminating food from his diet that sort of thing but just wondered if anyone else has experienced anything like this.... Is this normal and the body's way of processing and digesting food

Is there anything in particular that could set this off?  I'm thinking of hidden ingredients that may trigger off a pain spasm ?

Could the stoma be changing shape .. I'm sure I've read that is could happen  he has had scans and we don't thing (fingers crossed)

He's been admitted to hospital a few times because of the pain and given morphine but I get the impression that he was just fobbed off a a bit

Thank you for reading and sorry for such a long post X

  • Hi.  Sorry to hear about your brother. I am in a similar position, I had stage 4 bowel cancer operated on two years ago and have recently been told it has spread to my liver and is inoperable.just prior to this diagnosis  I ad a couple of bouts of what seemed to start off as a spasm type tummy ache but escalates into unbearable pain in my central tummy area which resolves after  an injection of morpine and lasts about two hours or so. I have had tests and nobody has a clear idea of what is causing it but they have suggested it might be due to internal scars from past surgeries that are getting trapped. I am not so sure. I wonder if it has anything to do with diet as I had bread prior to each attack and I know I find bread hard to digest at the best of times so it may be a good idea for your brother to keep track on what he is eating prior to his attacks. Sorry that is the only advice I can offer. By the way is your brother having chemotherapy? I am deciding what to do. Good luck
