Small Cell Lung Cancer

Hi, I'm new to this site. I was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer (limited stage) on January 2, 2016. I have two more rounds of chemo to go thru. Three months after my last chemo I'll be getting a CT Scan to see if the cancer is shrinking. I am so scared. I'm finding it hard to go about my life. It's always on my mind. I guess I'm still in shock in some ways. I'm having trouble with a low hemoglobin count which doesn't help because it's causing shortness of breath and dizziness. I got a shot of procrit the other day. I won't know if it's helping until I go for chemo tomorrow.

  • Hi Roseb30

    Welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm sure many here will understand how you are feeling when you say it is hard to go about your life.

I hope others who have similar experiences and feelings will come along to introduce themselves shortly.

I hope too that the procrit is working and that your chemo went well.

    Best wishes

    Jane

  • Hi

Your story sounds really similar to my mums, she was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer on 01 June 2016, and is stage 2 (at least she thinks that was what she was told). She will also have to go back in three months for a CT Scan to see if the cancer is shrinking.
She had her first chemo on the 8th June (I don't know which type I will find out). She was very sick with chronic diarrhoea and had to go back into hospital that weekend due to dehydration (everytime she took a sip of water or ate - she was being sick). She also has issues with her blood/ blood pressure and she is suffering with constant dizziness.

The hospital gave her some other anti sickness med - that seems to have worked and the diarrhoea has cleared up. It is just this dizziness that is preventing her from doing things as simple as taking a shower or preparing her food or going outside (she hasn't in about 3 weeks). She lives alone and my sister trys to get to see her every day. I live in a different city an hour and a half away, and have an 8 yr old so my sister is doing the main caring. My mum sleeps on the sofa downstairs as she finds it difficult to get upstairs with the dizziness and she is low in energy/appetite. We are all waiting for the CT scan 3 months in to see if the chemo is having an effect. I can't really think beyond that. If anybody has any suggetions for the dizziness -meds to ask for/tips how to deal with, it would be greatly appreciated

  • Hello Rose,

I am sorry to learn about your mum’s situation.

I am one of the nurses, and because you have not received any replies our moderator asked if we could help. However I am afraid that this is a topic where I don’t really have a great deal of expertise. So I am not sure what to suggest.  Also dizziness it is not a condition, but a symptom which has a number of different causes. Finding the cause and if possible treating it can sort out the problem.  So if your mum has not already done so it would be a good idea to discuss the situation with her cancer specialist or GP.  I mention this because the dizziness may not be connected to the small cell lung cancer

But finding the cause and treating it may be easier said than done.  So I can appreciate why you are asking about tips to manage the dizziness. There are some tips on the website of the Meniere’s Society website (this is a condition that causes dizziness)  here, but to be honest I am not sure how they fit into her situation.

I do hope that your mum is able to get some help from her own medical team. If you think that it might be useful you are welcome to get back to us. If you would like to telephone our free phone number is 0808 800 4040. We are here from Monday to Friday between the hours of 9am to 5pm.

    Kind regards,

    Jean
