New Diagnosis

Hi All,

So my mum recently went for a CT Scan due to a mass found in her Kidney after she developed back pain. The mass was around 2.5cm and they intially thought it was a cyst but did a CT scan to check. They have unfortunatly come back within a few days to advise that it is suspicious of "Renal Cell Carcinoma" so she is going to going for a full MRI ( apparantly just part of the process) luckly the tumour seems containted within the Kidney and has not spread to bones, liver or blood! as I am sure you can all relate I am really worried as mum is perfectly fit and healthy and this just seems to come out of the blue!! the mass itself as not grown since the ultrasound a month ago which I can imagine can only be a good sign!

Just hoping anyone can give me an idea of what next steps are now and also silly question but its just worrying me... if not in blood stream and to the far side of the kidney is the chances of it spreading to other organs lungs etc very unlikly? I have stupidly been on the internet and worried myself! also what sort of recovery times are there if she has tumour removed or if the whole kidney is removed?

All help and advise would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hello Jess24,

What a lovely caring daughter you seem to be. It's great news that your mum's tumour is contained within the kidney and hasn't spread. Try not to scare yourself too much by going on the internet - as everyone here will tell you, it rarely provides reassurance and only serves to exacerbate our anxieties.

We have some reliable information on our website on the different types of kidney cancer which you can read here. You can also find out more about surgery for kidney cancer here.

But perhaps you could give our nurses a call as it sounds like you could do with talking to someone? They know a lot about cancer and may be able to answer your questions. You can ring them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. It's a free number if you live in the UK.

I hope others with experience of kidney cancer will pick up your message and share their story with you.

    Best wishes,
