2 week cancer pathway referral downgraded!!!!

HI all, Can anyone help please? I have since xmas had neasua, dull pain central and left side under ribs and lost around a stone and a half in weight. Also strangely for the last two weeks a yellow tongue. Over the last few days the dull pain discomfort has turned in to sharper stabbing like pain. My doctor started me on inhibaters to control the heart burn and I had blood tests an d ultrasound. After this on the 12th of Feb I was referred via a 2 week urgent cancer pathway referral. I have been bounced/downgraded to a routine 12 week appointment Gp not happy and sent further referral. Can anyone help or have knowledge of similar horror stories, very worried I am 45 and lost my mum to breast cancer when I was 16.

  • Have you tried contacting the hospital department directly?

The ENT department I go to, has a line you can call to try and get a faster appointment.

If you Google (the hospital only!) and find the department, there might be a direct line.

Good luck to you. I did not know if was possible for you to downgrade you once on the two week path.

  • I'm assuming you are an NHS patient? if so, get an urgent appointment to see your GP and get him/her to find the name and position of exactly who downgraded you from a 2 week to a 12 week wait and why.

It sounds to me, as a former NHS IT and Information manager, that someone might be gaming with the figures to try to avoid breaching the 2 week wait rules. That said, if there IS a genuine clinical reason for your downgrade, you and your GP have the right to know who is responsible and the grounds on which their decision was made. A formal letter of complaint would seem appropriate - frankly the Chief Executive of the Trust could be sacked if someone has acted inappropriately and his/her managers turned a blind eye to it.

You could always go private for the investigation, if you can afford it, but frankly you shouldn't have to.

Your story is an increasingly common one as the cuts in local NHS funding bite and the number of Trusts over-spending as a consequence is ever increasing.

    Good luck
    Dave

  • Thank you Dave,

It's a nightmare, I asked the Dr's secretary and she first said that the specialist Dr wanted further information and has written to my GP. That was a lie no letter was written, I logged a formal complaint and the other day the complaints officer came back to me and said the reason for the downgrade according to the Dr was the orginal referral stated I had put weightt on? Again I checked with my GP and they sent two referrals the GP sent a second to reaffirm the original had to be Urgent!!! Not one of those letters state I had put on weight but they clearly state I have lost over a stone in weight. I have now got my MP involved too I am shocked and disgusted at the lies!!! You know when your not right and pre all the symptoms I was as fit as I have been for over 20 years I climbed Kilimanjaro for a cancer charity last September so I know the constant neasua/pain complete loss of appetite and bowel changes is not good and the worry from loosing both parents to cancer. I am shocked it basically ruling on someone that might have a chance to fight and servive a serious problem to basically no chance. I am due to see the GP Monday. I will ask if there is mileage in trying to get an emergency abdominal CT to by-pass this Dr at least have a chance at a diagnosis. I am now getting sharper pain on my left side so she may even admit me in an attempt to get the tests done, but it is so so wrong!!!
