my mum has breast cancer

Hi

My mum was told that she has breast cancer on thursday after finding a lump in her right breast. she has been told that she may lose her hair from 6 months of chemo. I am so scared im going to lose her, but im trying to stay strong when shes around. I am the oldest child and her only daughter, i am praying that i have enough strenght to support her and my family through this.

  • Hello there Shirl

I was diagnosed 4.5 years ago. I had chemo and radio. I opted to use the cold cap and didn't lose my hair. Tell her to enquire about that as an option. I won't say that it's nice but it worked for me. My hair slightly thinned but that was fine by me. I will tell you that once you have been diagnosed you get on the hamster wheel and you are supported by our health service all the way. They are fantastic! She'll be so grateful to have you around supporting her too. DON'T thinkl of this as a death sentence , IT IS NOT !

Come back here whenever you want, there are lots of lovely people here that will help as much as they can.

  • Hi Marian

Thank you so much for your reply

Its reassuring to hear someone else who has been through this experience and come out the other side.

My mums breast care nurse did mention the cold cap, so when we go back to hospital on tuesday, i will ask for more information.

  • Hi Shirl,

My mum recently got diagnosed with breast cancer which had spread to her underarm nodes, but let me tell you she is doing fantastic! She had her op and then went on to have 6 sessions of chemo, she used the cold cap which worked very well so its worth a go. She still has to have an Herceptin injection for the next year but that isn't for everyone it depends on the type of cancer. The best thing you can do for your mum and yourself is to stay positive! it is so scary and upsetting but you do get your head round it and you will just all get on with it! Talk, listen be positive and stay strong x
