Having finished my last chemo in November I am now suffering from really bad aches and pains in my joints especially my knees.

Is it possible that this is due to the chemo?   I did  read somewhere that Chemo can cause Vit D deficiency.  Is there any literature on aching joints following Chemo and better still is there a cure?  Having had 6 sessions of Chemo with very few problems, I now find myself extremely debilertated and note it is getting worse.  Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hello Maszzion,

I am sorry to hear about the aches and pains in your knees and I can appreciate that this must be a difficult time for you.  Unfortunately some cancer treatments can cause achy joints but without knowing the type of chemotherapy you had and if you are having any further treatment can I possibly say what could be causing these symptoms. For example some types of hormonal treatment can lower calcium levels and cause these types of symptoms.  But there are also other treatments that can cause achy joints.

There is also a chance , but I really am not sure about this, that these symptoms could also be caused by other conditions such as arthritis.

Have you been able to talk with your specialist team about this, if you have a specialist nurse you could let him or her know.  They would hopefully be able to let you know if these symptoms are related to treatments you had or are currently having.  If it is believed to be related to calcium levels you may be prescribed supplements .  You would also be given advice on controlling the discomfort you have.

You would be more than welcome to get back to us and if you would prefer to speak to one of the information nurses, you can telephone us on 0808 800 4040. We are here between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
