My husband has stage 4 terminal lung cancer

Hi,  my husband was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and secondary in the adrenal glands,  he went through chemo but on his last cycle of three they had to lower the dose as it was not helping,  a scan showed the tumor hadn't shrunk,  had 10 sessions of radiotherapy with no side effects which was fantastic but what now,  his breathing has started to sound rasping again,  we have another appointment with oncologist this week but I don't know what to expect,  can anyone advise

  • Hi Deb

Sorry you find yourself in this position.

I'm having to guess a lot because I don't really know baout your husband's cancer but I'm looking at the NICE recommendations here: www.nice.org.uk/.../1-Guidance

Based on that (see 1.4.41) I'm guessing his first Chemotherapy which didn't work was Carboplatin (or cisplatin perhaps) and something like paclitaxel.

1.4.43 suggests Docetaxel where there is metastatic cancer (stage iv) and there's been a relapse.

So like I say I don't even know what sort of lung cancer your husband has but if I had to guess I'd think the Oncologist will suggest a different chemo - agent. If he doesn't maybe ask him if Docetaxel might be worth trying.

    www.cancerresearchuk.org/.../docetaxel

Technically this is a "curative" treatment, if they've decided that it is definately terminal then they may just want to follow the palliative treatment options in section 1.5 - mostly radiotherapy and trying to treat symptoms in which case he may want to refer your husband to someone to help him control his breathing and maybe prescribe some drugs.

People have different thought on Chemo but if it were me I'd be asking him to have one more shot at chemo with a different agent.

    Best of luck
