Dad diagnosed with colorectal cancer

My dad was diagnosed with colorectal cancer at the beginning of December after a colonoscopy showed a 5cm tumour 12cm into the colon. He had been having symptoms of something for over a year but hadn't been to the dr's until around October just gone. The CT just before Christmas showed that the cancer had breached the bowel wall, although I don't understand much about this, but that it hasn't spread to the rest of the colon. We were given an idea of the treatment he would receive very roughly as being chemo, radio and then surgery. However after his MRI we were told that although no mets were showing anywhere they get wanted him in for surgery in ten days time which is next week. This has come as a complete shock as it seems like the big stuff has come round all too quickly. We are all heartbroken, my dad is only in his early fifties and he is petrified. Life is never perfect but it feels as if something has come along and burst out bubble. I've always known people affected by cancer but never thought it would touch my family and now it has it just feels like we're living a nightmare. It's the first thing we all think about in the morning, the last thing at night and wake up having dreamt about it. I wish I could do something to help but I know there's nothing all I can do is hope. Has anyone been in a similar situation with this cancer? I would love to hear some positive stories as I would like to relay them back to my lovely dad just so that he knows there is some hope because as you can imagine he is thinking the worst.

  • Hi ALP

Welcome to Cancer Chat and sorry about your dad's diagnosis.

It's often said here that cancer doesn't just affect one person, it affects entire families.

You will find plenty of other members here who are caring for someone with cancer and they will understand how you are feeling now.

I hope those who read your post who have positive stories to share will respond to you shortly.

Please let us know how you and your family are getting on.

    Best wishes

  • Hi ALP I am sorry to hear that you are all feeling so scared it is a terrible time the early stages of diagnosis. My partner was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer over 10 years ago he had three quarters  of his bowel removed followed by chemotherapy then a liver resection he has since had two more resections the last just two weeks ago and he is doing fine there is so much they can do for colorectal cancer today and it sounds like your dads has been caught at an early stage the fact that the hospital is moving quickly is really positive news although I can understand how it feels scary good luck and keep positive best wishes to you all

  • Dear ALP

I am sorry to hear about your dad, but I am a colorectal cancer survivor. I was diagnosed with Stage 3 nearly 4, 2 years ago and after the amazing treatment offered at the Royal Marsden, I still have my bowel fully intact. You don't say which hospital you are in , but with a condition as you describe, getting the best Surgeon & Oncology team is essential. Make contact if you want to know more. I did have a lung op and I am now on the Royal Marsden deferal of surgery programme being monitored every 3 months! Best Wishes Paul
