Hello all,
First post on here, warn you it may be a bit long and my terminology may not be correct so sorry about that in advance!
My Mum has had 2 operations for removal of polyps over the years. In Jan last year she started bleeding badly and after several examinations at hospital it was decided that she should have a complete hysterectomy....the doctor at the hospital who examined her said that she thought that the polyp was cancerous.
The hysterectomy took place and it came back at the follow up examination that there were serous carcinoma cells - I think they said at Stage 2 (I can't remember exactly) and that these cells were only a few mm into the wall of the womb and that they had removed the whole womb so should be ok.
In Feb she had a CT scan which came back fully clear which was a relief. However, the consultant at the hospital said to just be on the safe side that she should have a course of brachytherapy in case there were any cells left, but he emphasised the precaution element of this alot. This was undertaken in April, 5 sessions which although unpleasant for her were made better by the wonderful staff at the hospital. She had a check up with the consultant in June and he said that he was very pleased with how she had healed up and all was well. She had been using a dialator as well.
She had an appointment for her check up which we just had last week. Unbeknown to me, just about Christmas time she had had a large bleed which had stopped and was replaced by alot of pinkish/brownish discharge. She didn't tell me as I was working over Christmas and she did not want me worrying. She mentioned about this bleeding and discharge to the GP at the hospital who examined her and this GP immediately said afterwards, I'm sorry but its cancer... she has taken a biopsy and Mum is being fast tracked for a CT scan on the top of her body and an MRI scan on her lower body. They were already talking then about Chemotherapy or Radiotherapy for her treatment
This is where I am confused, and maybe I am in denial as I know that this Serous Carcinoma is relatively rare and particulary aggressive, but can a doctor tell just by what she has seen whilst taking the biopsy that it is cancer? We will get the result in about 2 weeks after the MRI and CT. Mum said that her back aches quite a bit and she feels constantly bloated with like a period pain, she is 79 yrs old, 80 later this year.
Thanks in advance, I needed to air my thoughts with some people that knew what I was talking about.
Regards
Liz
