Hello johnnyd,
I noticed you hadn't yet received a response to your post which is very surprising as we have a very active community of users who have had prostate cancer. I think your thread must have accidentally gone down the pages so by responding I will have made sure to bump it back to the top! Our lovely Brian (woodworm) would be a good person for example for you to talk to.
We have some information on our site on Decapeptyl injections which you can find here. You can also read more about side effects associated with these injections here.
We've had many threads discussing prostate cancer in the last few days. Most relevant to you maybe would be this one by Cary and this one by Mike 56. Mike56 in particular mentions he was having side effects which he thought were caused by Triptorelin (another name for Decapeptyl). Feel free to respond to any of these threads and hopefully you can get chatting to someone who experienced similar reactions to these injections.
Our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm if you have any questions for them.
I hope this helps you a little and that someone will be along soon to share their story with you.
Best wishes,
Lucie, Cancer Chat Moderator
Hi Johnny,
Sorry not to have responded before but must have somehow missed your post. You dont say what sort of reaction you have had to you injections.
The injections I had were zolazdex and gave me hot flushes and weight gain. I do know some people get aches and pains but I didnt suffer from those at all. Also If I heard or read anything sad, I used to get tears in my eyes and there was nothing I could do to stop it. Hormone therapy did however bring about a big reduction in my psa level and together with the radiotherapy has in my opinion probably saved my life.
Wishing you all the best with your treatment and please let us know what reactions you are suffering from, Brian
Thanks for your post Brian. I was light headed, had terrible fatigue and tiredness, unable to nap “light on” awake and cold sweats. Indecisive when shopping. Dry mouth and a longer reaction. That seems to have passed so I am feeling much better. Perhaps my body has adjusted now as it's been over a week since the injection. Did you have injections that lasted a month or three months? That's the choice I have next time. All the best to you. Is your treatment finished ?
John
Hi John,
Glad to hear you are feeling better now. It does normally take a few days for it to settle down. I started off on the 28 day injection but after about three months, I went on to the twelve week injections. I finnished my treatment about four years ago and my psa has been creeping up very slowly but is still very low at 1.4. My oncologist said in time he expects it to reach about 3.5 to 4.5 which is the norn for somone of my age. I cant fault the treatment I had and the service I recieved was terrific.
Do you have far to go to get your radiotherapy? I was lucky in that mine was close by; well just over 12 miles away but there is a bus servive that runs between two hospital so having my buss pass was able to use the buss. I did work it out; had I not done this I would driven over 1000 miles including my follow up appionments plus the cost of parking fees on top. The financial cost soon mounts up.
Take care, sending kind thoughts and best wishes your way, Brian.
I am pleased you are doing so well, time is a great healer!
I am lucky that the hospital is only a short drive away and I have been given a parking pass, and there are reserved parking slots for radiotherapy patients. How spoilt am I?
Thanks
John
