New to forum ; mum with ovarian cancer

iMy 82 year old mum has ovarian cancer . She was diagnosed 2 years ago after a year of symptoms which were treated as IBS ! She was eventually admitted to hospital with fluid on the lungs from the cancer. 5 chemos followed but no op was possible due to spread/age etc .She does well looking after her home and all her own chores .emotionally she struggles at times and really I am her only support . My sister lives in L A .I love her dearly but am very scared about her future months and how we will both cope . Any help would be appreciated . She had already survived longer than thought and Has some pains but not unmanageable . Thanks Christine

  • Hi Christine

I feel for you and your Mum.  Have you discussed how to access support for your Mum - and, very importantly you, with her GP or Hospital Consultant?  Might this be a positive step forward so that you can have in place people to contact and be there when you find it too difficult to support your Mum?  I lived 180 miles away from my Mum yet was able to be at her home during the week and my sister did the long weekends as she also lived far away.  Even with us being there with Mum 24 7 - we had carers twice and then three times a day - because it is so exhausting and emotionally crippling at times - especially over a year.  Mum died peacefully in her sleep - we had a chat at 6am and when I popped into her bedroom after my shower and dressing - she had died.  Her wish happened - but it took me ages to get my energy and spirits back because caring is exhausting.  Please - consider getting help.  All my thoughts to you and your Mum.  Sian
