oesophageal cancer and the big op.......

My partner was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in July, she is nearly finished her chemotherapy now and is due to have her operation in December. I'm here looking for any advice on what to expect during and after the operation from people going through the same situation. I've read up on the practical side of things but would be good to know anything from anyone actually living it and in the caring position.

  • Hello again,

once more thanks for this, it truly is appreciated to get some insight into what to expect from someone who has gone through it. Although Jayne is choosing not to use the forum herself yet, she is comforted by your words too. I'm sorry I have nothing to offer to comfort you with what you're going through now yourself, but staying strong and positive goes a long way and it sounds like you are doing that. I like the words that were given to you by davek and can't come up with anything better that. You will very much be in my thoughts though and I do hope Wednesday runs smoothly for you and you sail through the next block of chemo with ease.

I have to say that the hospital are being great really, they have given a very detailed breakdown of the operation. Jayne is actually handling it better than me I think. I hate the idea of it all but know it is for the best, she is very much taking it in her stride and managing not to stress about it,she really is being quite amazing. Her chemo has passed by quite smoothly, without too many off days, so fingers crossed she follows the same path for the next step in this.

Do keep in touch and keep us posted with how you and your family are doing x

  • Hi I've been thinking of you and Jayne and wondering how you're getting on? Has Jayne had her op yet? If not good luck and best wishes for Christmas Kx

  • Hello again, I've been thinking of you too, I came on this a few days ago to see if you had been on, didn't want to bother you as you hadn't been on.

Jayne had her operation 1 week ago today, she had some issues initially with pain as her epidural didn't work at all. This then had a knock on effect with her oxygen levels as taking big breaths were painful for her, so her oxygen levels were low. All of that has been sorted now though and today she had first first drink adm X-rays to check all is in order. She's really doing quite well and we are still thinking she'll be out in time for Christmas.

How are things with you? How's your chemo going? I do hope you're getting through it without too much discomfort. Hope all your family are well and that you're in good spirits.

Wishing you a very happy Christmas with your family,

    take care xx

  • Hello so good to hear Jaynes doing well, fingers crossed she's home for Christmas, it sounds like you're both coping well and dealing with each challenge which is great. I've really been struggling with chemo this time round, I also sailed through it before my op and was actually still working, however I think everything my body has been through physically and mental I'm just not as strong plus I have chemo tablets in between intravenous cycle. Anyway I'm feeling ok at the mo and have a 2 week break now before 3rd chemo on the 30th Dec. I hope you have a lovely Christmas and NY together and keep in touch Kx

  • Hello again, thought I'd check in to see how you're doing. I hope you had a good Christmas and that 2016 brings you some nice surprises.

Jayne got home on Christmas eve, so we managed to go to her mums and see her for an hour or so. It's been a lttle bit difficult, burst open wounds and a lot of vomiting, but it's so good to have her home, just need to try and get some food to stay down.

I really do wish you well, and hope that your time away from treatments and at home has been good. Thanks for responding to my messages, it's been a big comfort hearing from you,

take care and wishing you a very happy new year xx
