Colon cancer

Hi, l was diagnosed with colon cancer end of June, had my op in August, was told it was a larger tumour than they had thought and that the lymph nodes had been affected,so now have to have chemo in intravenous and tablet form for the next six months to ensure all has well and truly gone.  This has been such a shock more so cos l have a great fright of anything medical, l have just had my second intro chemo and started tablets yesterday, the first session l was in a panic with the side effects, my oncologist said l shouldn't suffer any more but reading on this site at what is happening to others l am now in an even greater panic.....so very scared.

  • Hi Liny,

Welcome to the forum, though sorry for the reason you're here.

I can understand your feelings after reading some of the posts on here, but try to remember that everyone's treatment/experience is individual to them and your medical team will have planned the best treatment for you.

They have to tell you about the possible side effects of the chemo regime, but you won't necessarily have all or any of them.  Your oncology team will make adjustments to your treatment as you go along to help you manage each session.

Please post anytime so that the forum can support you. Take care, - sending you a hug, Jo

  • Hello, sorry to hear your news but please stay positive, the early days are Scarry. I was diagnosed with colon cancer in Nov 2005 having my op Dec 2005, I was at the same stage as you. I too had 6 months of chemo...the tablets weren't available then so its great you are having that extra treatment. The chemo wasn't too bad a little sickness feeling but they will give you anti sickness tablets for that and there are a few you can try. I went for chemo (intravenously) each Wed felt a bit sickly on Thursday but fine by Friday. After the 6 months I had another CT scan then just a check up appointment every 3 months which eventually was 6 months. Then after 5 years I was discharged now I just have a colonoscopy every 5 years. I'm fine and dandy no more problems 10 years later. Just take each appointment as it comes and stay positive the time will soon pass and you will emerge stronger. Sending to my love and good wishes.
