looking for support

Hi. My mum in law (who I'm closer to than my mum) has just been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. There's cells in her lungs but they don't know where the primary is. She was in hospital to reinflate a collapsed lung and they couldn't get it to stay inflated so they did tests and found it. She now has a permanent chest drain fitted because she had fluid build-up causing difficulties breathing after just four days without a drain.

They have just said she has a matter of months but want to do chemo in a couple of weeks.

Thankfully this is my first brush with cancer and my first close brush with death but that means I'm a bit lost and trying to support my wife, who is also in the same position!

  • Hi

Welcome to the forum though of course sorry to read why you are here.  Hopefully the medical team looking after your Mum in Law are keeping her as comfortable as possible and I would imagine they have offered chemo to help her with the quality of life.  My husband had a different cancer but did have a small amount of palliative chemo which did help slow the growth of the cancer a little. Generally treatment is only offered where they feel the patient will benefit  and the final decision is always left with the patient.

I am sure other forum members will be along to say hi shortly but if you would like to talk with one of the nurses you can telephone the number on this page (freephone from UK landlines) Mon to Fri 9-5 or alternatively post questions in the Ask the Nurses section (replies here can take up to three days depending on workload).
