Hello - Stage 4 CUP

Hi, I'm Shelley, diagnosed in April with Stage 4 Mets in liver, lung, lymph and bone of Unknown Primary.

I've always been fit and healthy, a personal trainer and rowing coach and have done lots of endurance rowing events, setting records, winning races, being "the first" so it's been quite a blow.

After several rounds of Carbo/Taxol chemo some of the cancer has responded but not my liver. But the C/T stuff got me strong enough so that I can now handle ECX chemo which I started last Friday. A few rounds are scheduled and then more scans to see if this stuff will work. I'm confident it will, apparently it's the big guns. :)

It's a horrible game being played with all of us but I can only be positive and look forward and enjoy the life that I have. I call it my "new normal" because it is just life as I've always known it but within a new set of parameters: hospital appointments and endless handfulls of pills and IVs of chemo.

Chin up. :)

  • I hope so i will see the family dr. Thursday. Thanks for replying. I was able to get up and around today.

  • That,s good, let us know how you get on. X

  • Hi Shelz.     How are things with you? I started my chemo last Friday and am feeling exhausted ,with not much appetite,I guess everyone probably feels that way. Hope you are ok and just battling on like we all have to.  Bye for now Sue x

  • Hi Sue, great that you've started treatment. I think exhaustion and food issues are most common but you'll get through them soon enough. When I can eat, I eat a lot to bulk up and when I can't eat I try and choose the things that are best for me - most calories and nutrition. However, I do eat a lot of ice cream as sometimes the capecitabine makes my oesophagus feel burnt and the ice cream cools and soothes it.

My last round of chemo has been harsh, I've had more side effects and they've lasted a lot longer and I've also been sick a lot, something I thought the oncologist had successfully sorted out for me (I have four different anti sickness remedies!). My energy levels seemed back to normal yesterday but today I'm knackered again.

Still, it just means I restructure my week and not do as much as I had booked in, sadly I have to cancel a shopping trip to Brighton which I was looking forward to but I just won't enjoy it in this state and I need to save my energy for a family wedding on Saturday and the first time since diagnosis that I can glam up. My long suffering boyfriend has had to endure hours of shopping for new dress, heels, everything!!

If you have a Macmillan centre near you then I really recommend booking in for some of their complementary therapies and also the Look Good Feel Better skin care and make up session when you have energy. It does help just being pampered.  Take care, Shel x

  • Forgot to say, I'm just off now for a scan to see how the ECX is working  Will get results next Weds - it's going to be a long week waiting!!! x

  •  Shelz,  Thanks  for the good advice and I will keep my ears open for any complimentary therapies in this area. Am going to get some ice cream this week as now you have mentioned it I am really craving something cool. Have been stuck in all week due to a reaction I had to the chemo last Fri, I had a laryngeal spasm where I had problems breathing , but it was sorted out pretty quickly. Off out to a friends for coffee and cake tomorrow,it will be so nice to get out again. Hope all goes well at the wedding, I will think of you. The weather I think should be ok for you. Enjoy your glamorous day. Sue x

  • Will keep everything crossed for you, let us know how you get on x

  • Hi Shellz

Im wishing you the best on your test. Let us know how your getting along. I have drs appt tomorrow. I feel better i been working trying to stay active. How are you feeling? Have a good day.

  •

Yay, good news! It took 7 weeks but I am now responding to the ECX and the cancer is going to sleep. The tumours in my liver and the scary ones on my heart wall and pressing against the aorta have shrunk. So glad.

More good news is that because I have a touch of flu I've got a week off before my next round. I'm planning on doing a lot of sleeping during that week as I've been so tired over the last three weeks.

Sue, how are you going with your treatment? And Berd, what has your doctor done for you - are you any closer to knowing what is going on?

    Shel x

  • Im so happy for you shellz. Im doing good going to a gastro dr in the next week or so. Im doing good. Im so happy for you. Your good news is just so beautiful. Hold on. Keep in touch.
