I want to get back to my regular exercise

Hi, I had a mastectomy and 9 lymphnodes removed at the end of April this year and I'm about to start chemotherapy tomorrow.  I have suspended my gym membership but I really want to get back to some normality and start doing my spin classes again. I know it's a pretty intense exercise so I wanted to know how long I should wait until I can do this exercise.  I feel physically and mentally well at the moment but walking exercise is not enough for me.

  • Exercise is so beneficial in recovery from any surgery. Not only that but resuming the normal activities of your life helps with your mental wellbeing. which in turn feeds back to your physical health. Ask your physiotherapy department for advice, major surgery takes a long while to fully recover from. You may find that during chemotherapy you will not feel up to intense exercise, dont underestimate how beneficial a brisk walk is for your health. When you are ready, go for it, but just at a gentle pace which is comfortable, dont overstretch dont overdo it. Realistically allow 12+ months to build yourself back up to where you were before surgery. Wishing you all the best with your treatment and recovery.

  • Thank you for the advice I will certainly ask the physio dept about this.

  • Hi karen, I don't know if this helps but at the end of March I had an upper lung lobectomy and I am now half way through adjuvent chemo .I generally swim 20 lengths of a swimming pool twice a week and also do yoga and walk miles just too and from places .The reality is chemo hits us all differently ,I have managed some swim sessions a little gently in between blood counts going up and down ,and most days I have walked some time short distances and sometimes longer ones .I have resented having lung cancer and then when feeling stronger post op I have resented the requirement of chemo ,but have had to learn to accept it .My message is ,do what you can but don't over do it .I felt if I could ignore all of it and get back to normal it would be taking control ,me in charge .When I swim apart from a few lung wound twinges I feel much better more relaxed less like the cancer has not changed my life totally and utterly I am me again .So I think I know where your coming from ,but be kind to yourself and be gentle doing a little something is better than nothing and it can only enhance your recovery .Take care and perhaps physio advice.

  • Exercise will benefit you in the long run but maybe a rigorous spin class could be a bit much if you are not feeling good from chemotherapy. There may be days you can exercise and days you feel tired. However, I do beleive any exercise will help the process and improve general well being. Good luck on your adventures. Cheers!
