chosing to have an hysterectomy

Hi , my mum has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer and is havif chemo at the moment , I am 42 and have no children. There is a history of cancer in my mums family and I am really wanting to have a full hysterectomy to totally eliminate the risk of me contracting it later in life. Does anyone have any experience of doing this and if so , how did you persuade your doctor to refer you.  I know that I am never going to have children at this stage i life and I have given it a lot of thought

any advice would be appreciated

Hi Lisajane.  I am sorry to hear about your Mum and hope that her treatment is going well.  You can contact the nurses here on the site who may be able to give you more information (their number is shown at the bottom of the page).  Personally, if I were in your position, I would talk to my GP and explain my fears and hopes for a hysterectomy.  You may find that he/she is very understanding of your situation and agrees that a referral would be of benefit.  Alternatively, as far as I am aware, there is a bloodtest that can detect raised CA levels for ovarian cancer - and your GP may at least offer you regular blood monitoring to check this.  I hope the nurses can offer you appropriate advice.  Best wishes to your Mum and your family x
