Breast removal

My mum was diagnosed in October last year with grade 3 in her breast and had her breast removed. She saw a plastic surgeon on friday who said she couldnt have reconstruction as not enough fat on her and her skin is too thin. She asked if she could have the other breast removed as her mother, grandmother and brother all had cancer and although she is a moderate to high risk her hospital wont do a the BRCA gene test. The plastic surgeon told her its very unlikely to find a surgeon to remove the healthy breast. She is struggling with only having one and matching her shape via prosthetics. She suffers with fibromyalgia and the heat and would rather be flat chested so she can work in her garden in the summer without a bra. I just wondered if anyone else had gone through or asked the same question of their surgeon?

  • Hi Sam36, regarding the BRCA2 test has your mum tried her gp? My nan died of breast cancer, then last year we found my aunty got ovarian cancer, she requested testing and proved to be positive. Also last year I got breast cancer and due to my aunt I got tested and found positive. I have just had both breasts removed as a result. I totally understand your mums feelings around just the one breast as I also shared her feelings. If your mum has ovarian or breast cancer in her family then her gp should refer.

    Regards
