Another newbie..!

Hi everyone,

im Andy  49 yrs in june recently diagnosed (26/3/15) with skull base cancer (dont know the name of the cancer) Started in oct 2014 with bad pain in my left ear and got treated for a ear infection for  5mth before been tested for cancer.

Ive had 2 appointments in sheffields Hallamshire Hospital this lasst week 2nd+6th, iIm going into hospital on 23rd this mth having surgery on 24th-26th followed by 1wk icu, 2wk on ward before finishing recovery at home then a bit or radio to finish it off! ive had the opperation explained to me and will be worried when the time comes has its not going to be nice but hopefully worth it..!

Anyway going to leave it at that for now and would like to say Hi n good luck to everyone and wish we all hadnt met ..!

  • Good luck Andy, you have a lot to cope with. Keep positive. You can beat this.

  • Thanks Alex, i think we all have a lot to cope with no matter what cancer or where it is! but what ive found in the very short time ive been diagnosed and registered on this site is how possative people/sufferers are and allways willing to give advice and point people in right direction!.

  • Hi Andy

I know what you mean about worries concerning operations.  With me it was Prostate Cancer, so I would have two weeks with a catheter!  The reality was nowhere near as bad as the fear!

I play football once a week and I'm the third person in our group to get cancer (one had it twice) and we're all still here.  The advice of the others helped me:  simply, "Be positive that you can beat it".

    Good Luck!

  • Hi Sonic,

i am positive and im strong and i want to no no no im going to beat this but on the other hand what ive been told by the surgeons that are doing it its not going to be easy and im going to be left with no ear at all! everything is going lug, inner ear bones surrounding the inner part of skull on top of what ever they remove from neck. Problem is im going to look like ive had a stroke with a drooping eye & mouth & face but as i see it its a small price to pay to get shut of cancer and well worth it! no ear isnt a problem as i can have magneticscrews put in and a false one made and it sticks on!!! but im jumping the gun a little as thats going to be 12mth orso down line so one step at a time as ive not started yet!

  • sorry to keep going on a bit but one thing that made it hard for me was The german sheperd in my profile pic went to vets as she was just a little bit off it! so took her just to be sure and ended up having her put to sleep as she had cancer..! and that was only about 6wk before i got told tha same!!! :(

  • Go on about it as much as you like - it puts my catheter story into perspective.

Sorry to hear about the dog, that's a double kick in the teeth.  Strangely, I had Bell's Palsy a couple of years ago and got the droopy face.  It's annoying but after a while I kind of got used to it.  I hope it's the same for you.

  • Hi. I am new to this site, have been living with cancer for 2 years now. Ovarian stage 3 which has just returned to rear its ugly head! About to start 6 cycles of chemo, and lose my hair all over again. But reading all these messages makes me feel not so alone. Keep strong.
  • Hello kellyra,

I just saw your message and felt I had to welcome you to our site (a big welcome to every one else on this thread too, you seem like a very friendly bunch of newbies!). Sorry to hear that your cancer has returned. You will definitely feel less alone on this site and I wanted to let you know actually that there is a lady who just posted today (gemma42) who just had surgery for ovarian cancer followed by 6 cycles of chemotherapy. I think you two will have a lot to say to each other. You can read her thread here and reply to her if you want and you can also start your own thread if you wish.

Best of luck kellyra with those 6 cycles of chemo you are about to start!
