New member with diagnosis

Hi, I was diagnosed with bladder cancer some give weeks ago.   Next Tuesfay I will have a hysterectomy and cystectomy culminating with a urostomy.  I am worried about this pretty major surgery but am more worried about any potential lymph node involvement although CT scan is clear so far.

  • Hi Gill = yes surgery is scary. Its one time you really have to put your trust in the doctors. One thing s that they have done loads of these operations before and know exactly what they are doing. My wife had downstairs dept operation for bowel cancer - and didn't find it too bad. It took her a while to recover and the emotional recovery does take a year or more.

Well, no nodes = has got to be good as it means it hasn't spread. So, do try to stay positive. The op will be over and then you can get on with things again.

The uro bag is no biggy either = Anne has one for the bowels and we settled down with it quickly and it hasn't caused any problems and is easy to sort out. It doesn't smell or show or anything. Its quite common to have one. Before the op. you will meeet the uro nurse who will explain it all. They are usually very nice. You can discover all about them on the internet.

So, overall = I know it sounds wierd - but I am positive for you that things will be fine. Goodness knows why life throws things at people - but it does!

Just take one day at a time - there is loads to take in and learn. Anne wanted to know everything about her cancer. Its a beautiful spring and take time to look at the flowers and birds. The emotions take a lot longer to deal with - but anyone can get this and go through the op and life changes - its like a huge mountain in the road ahead. By just taking little steps one at a time you can climb that mountain and when you get to the top = you will feel " well - that wasn't so bad after all"

All the best you brave lady
