New to here

Hi everyone,

I'm new on here.  My dad has been living with different forms of cancer since 2007 when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and had treatment which cured it for a short time.  He was then diagnosed just before Christmas 2009 when he was about to retire with bowel cancer and he had part of his bowel moved and treated with chemotheraphy which unfortunately left him with very bad neuropathy that no-one seems to be able to do anything for.  A year later his bowel cancer appeared in his liver and he had over half of his liver removed again he had some chemo but then again after another year he had to go back under for more of his liver to be removed and more chemo.  Last year he was told it was terminal cancer when it reappeared again on his adrenal gland, spots in his stomach cavity and in two of his lymph nodes.  It has been a tough time for us all but the worst thing is his neuropathy as he is unable to do a lot of things now because of the pain and he says if he'd have known that the chemo would have done that to him he wouldn't have bothered.  Through all of it though he's been an amazing fighter and he is and always will be my hero. :)

  • Hello Emma80,

Thanks for sharing your story. Your poor dad - he has been through a lot since 2007. You have come to the right place though to get information and advice on neuropathy for example as well as to talk to others who understand only too well what your daddy and you are going through.

Neuropathy has been discussed many times in this forum. One thread that may be helpful to you is this one where one of our users asked our nurses a question about peripheral neuropathy. I hope this is relevant to you or if you have any other question for our nurses about this, don't hesitate to post in the Ask the Nurses section. I am sure they won't mind discussing this with you.

Our nurses helpline is also just a free phone call away - if you are a UK resident, just ring 0808 800 4040 Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and they will be able to advise you on any cancer related question you may have.

Best wishes and a big welcome to our forum!

  • Hi Emma,

Sorry no one apart from our lovely Lucie has responded to you as yet but we have had a lot of new people joining this friendly site during the past few days. So welcome to this friendly site. I like your dad had prostate cancer but luckily I have made a good recovery, so sorry to hear your dad is suffering so much pain.

It must be hard for him if he cannot do anything much. I just want to wish you and your father all the very best and hope that things will improve, Brian.
