Hi everyone

My name is Angela, my Dad has recently (29th Dec 14) been diagnosed with Penile cancer, for those that don't know what it is its cancer of the penis.  We had never heard of this and as you can image my Dad was very distressed and upset to find out he would have to loose his penis.  He has had his operation on 5th Jan 15 and we have been told this week that the cancer is all over his groin area, lymph nodes, stomach and chest.  They are giving him radiotherapy to try to shrink the tumours in the groin area to give him a bit of extra time but it might not be much, we are meeting the oncologist this wed to find out more  information.

I've had to phone round what feels like the world to find help for him, the hospital were going to discharge him with no assesment, he is a 73 year old man who lives alone.  One after one department denied being responsible nor could help, eventually someone took pity on me and advised me of names and numbers and we got the ball rolling.

I still feel that everything takes ages to arrange anyone find this???

I want to try and raise awareness of this cancer so that men can get checked out quickly and hopefully not get to the situation my poor father is in.

  • Hello Energiserbunny,

I'm sure that some of our members will be along soon to say Hello and share their thoughts and experiences about how long it can take for things to be organised.

In the meantime I wanted to link you to some information that we have on our Cancer Help page about penile cancer and in particular, if you haven't already come across them, some information about organisations that offer support to those affected by men's cancer. I've linked that for you here.

If you would like to speak to them, we do also have a team of nurses available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040 (free to call from a UK landline).

    Sending best wishes,

  • Hi Angela,

So sorry to read about your dads situation. I can only say I had the best of service and treatment for my prostate cancer and couldnt fault the NHS. I am sorry you and your dad have not recieved the same level of service as I did.

Well done for trying to raise awarness of this particular cancer.  I suspect due to it's particular nature, there is little publicity regarding it, and we men are reknown for not going to the doctors, especially if we have an enbarrasing problem.

I hope when you meet your dads oncologist on Wednesday, he is able to give you both more information regarding the radiotherapy and might be worthwhile asking if hormone treatment (Zoladex) is a suitable treatment for in my case I am convinvinced it along with radiotherapy helped save me. It's also used for breast cancer. They inject a hormone Pellet/implant under the skin of the lower abdomen. It does have a few side affects but they are not serious, things like hot flushes. Hope this helps.

Take care, best wishes to you both and please let us know how you get on, Brian

  • Thanks Brian for the information and reply, What is the zoladex used for if you don't mind sharing the information.

  • Hi Angela,

Zoladex is the name of the hormone therapy I had. It acts by shriking the tumour and even before I had the radiotherapy it had reduced my PSA from 70 to 3.18. I started by having one injection which lasts for 28 days but after three months had the bigger one which lasted twelve weeks. Hormone therapy can also be given in tablet form but dont knoe=w the name of this type. Hope this helps. If you have any other questions, Please do not hesitate to ask. Best wishes, Brian.
