PROSTATE CANCER - ANYONE BEEN THERE & DONE THAT?

Hi, I have just been told by my Consultant that I have Prostate Cancer.

I am aged 58 years old and married and live a relatively fit & healthy lifestyle and have been healthy for all of my life (except having my appendix removed years ago!) so it has come as a bit of a shock to the system.

I had 3 x sets of biopsies and cancer was found in the 3rd set with a Gleason Score of 4:4, a total of 8, which is quite high.

I have just has an MRI & Bone Scan and am awaiting the results before going back to see my Consultant where we will discuss the severity of the cancer, whether it has spread outside my Prostate, my overall prognosis and the way ahead with whatever treatment(s) may be suitable.

I am staying upbeat and optimistic and I really just want to know what it is that I have and how I can try to make it better.

There is a LOT of stuff out there to read on Prostate Cancer and some of it is very scarey indeed and I appreciate that I need to know the full picture before I start to worry about "what and if", so I don't worry - yet!

I wondered if there are any gents out there who have already been through a similar experience and if so, if you have any advice or pearls of wisdom to pass onto me?

Many thanks.

  • Hi and welcome to the forum the club nobody wants to join.

You'll find gents and different stages and treatments on here. Again welcome

  • Hi, your symptoms are almost an exact match to my own, I am two years older than you. I opted for six months of hormone treatment and twenty sessions of radiotherapy, my prostate had bulged out close to the urinary tract so there was the possibility that surgery could have affected the urinary tract. Finished radiotherapy mid February this year and I am now pretty much back to full health. I went skiing to France four weeks after the end of the treatment, apart from being a bit breathless I had no problem getting back to normality. Best of luck, John.

  • Hi Prostrate I have just had the op to remove mine ,well nearly a month ago.I have posted my thought .To date I feel fine ,don't know if their is any remaining cells yet.The only thing left is the  water works leaking, but I am doing my pelvic exercises they seem to work if you keep them, but don't over do it.Good luck.

  • Hi

I had my op 18 months ago and like you I had a leaking for a few weeks but soon cleared up.

I am fully back to health except I never regained my erection although I had nerve sparing surgery.

bit of a bummer which gets me down sometimes

    but maybe a small Sacrifice

  • hello

I had Radical Prostae Surgery had m6 sperm glands removed  tried tablets vacum pump. no is the answer plus you lose leongth and girth of penis that is not told before surgery I lost abou5 40 mm length and about /25 mm from girth.

But I  have a PSA of less than 0.1 and felling positive.

    would not change the  treatment.

  • About 14 months ago I had a blood test which came back with a PSA of 19.4. Its now less than 0.1.

In the last year I've had a biopsy (Gleason 4+5), lots of scans under lots of machines, had gold jewellery inserted near my Crown Jewellery, 6 sessions of chemotherapy and 37 sessions of radiotherapy.

It really takes it out of you, and it seems to take quite a while to get over it, but I believe I'm experiencing a month-on-month improvement, so expecting to feel like super-man by the end of this year.

My main grumbles now are swelling in the feet & ankles, and I hate having the Zoladex jabs every 3 months. However, generally speaking, life is good.

If you are interested, I've posted notes on my experiences here: captainbodgit.blogspot.com/.../cancer

(the first post is at the bottom of this page)

...and for those of you gentlemen who think there might be a problem with the old water works, but have so far not had a test, please look at this video, Get Tested: www.youtube.com/watch

The sooner you are tested, the better the outcome.
