Meningy what? Recent Meningioma diagnosis

Hi there, I have recently been diagnosed with a Meningioma (probably sphenoid wing) following an MRI and CT scan about 3 weeks ago now. I have been referred to Southampton Hospital and recieved a call from the neurologist yesterday who left me a message to reassure me that no immediate action was required and that my case was being discussed.

I had been suffering with severe headaches following an infection and thought it was just a migraine, although I had never suffered with migraines before. My GP was excellent and made an appointment at the Acute Medical Clinic in Poole where i had the scans and was given the probable diagnosis.I was told it was small, slow growing and benign - all great news but still I am left a little confused, still with headaches and not much the wiser about my little friend in my head! My b/f and I were left in a state of shock as we didnt really understand what was happening. I had taken some time off work to get my head around it ( pardon the pun). I'm a teacher and my school have been amazingly supportive. I'm looking for to returning after half term - as long as these darn headaches can ben controlled.

I rang the neurosurgeon's secretary yesterday who said that my case was being discussed today and that a management plan would be decided... I should hear soon.

So, in summary, there is something wrong with me but i'm not sure what will happen now. I've read far too much and all I really want to do is to talk with the consultant as I have lots of questions.

Has anyone else been diagnosed with a similar condition? I'm 35, female, no children and a little scared. Thank goodness for charities like this whom I have given time and money to but never once thought I would need to use.... Amazing people, thank you.

  • Hi,

Welcome to the forum - but sorry that you have cause to join us.

I've no first hand knowledge of your particular condition, but hopefully someone will respond who has.

Waiting for your initial results is always very stressful, especially if you've been Googling your condition and read all the worst case scenarios (as I had). Can I suggest that you right down a list of questions, go through them all with your consultant and write down his answers? After my first consultation I found that I had written down answers to questions that I couldn't even remember asking as my short term memory was impaired by my anxiety.

    Good luck with your results!

  • Dave, thank you for your reply. Your advice is really useful, I will make sure I either write down or record the consultants responses.

  • Hi

Yes I too have a brain tumour which they think is a benign meningioma. I'm female and 46. They only found it when they did a scan which showed I had tonsil cancer! It was really scary at first but, if you are going to have a brain tumour, it's a better one to get as it is on the lining of the brain rather than the brain itself.

Have they told you where it is? Mine is at the front near my nose. My first scan was in January last year, then I had another in September and one in march of this year. The tumour hasn't grown so they are leaving it for the time being although they've made it clear that it will have to be removed within five years. The prognosis for meningiomas is normally good though. My consultant said the op would be "uncomplicated and curative". I do hope do!

I'm sure this is all you can think about but it does get easier. I've had migraines since I was 17 but now, when I get one, I get really worried even though they've told me I may have had the tumour for 20 years!

Try not to worry about it.

  • Debbie, thank you for sharing your experience. Yes, I have been told that it's the best one to have if you're going to have one!

Mine is behind my right eye. I'm was a little concerned about something I read about pregnancy and the growth of the tumour. I guess this is a question for my consultant. The pain in my head has lessened over the past couple of weeks but I'm worried it will return when I start teaching again next week.

I hope your throat cancer is now under control.

    Thank you for reassuring me.

    Sally

  • Hi Sally

Yes I was told by my consultant at my last appointment not to get pregnant because this can make the tumour grow quickly. This isn't a problem for me as I have two children.

My tonsil cancer is in remission so all is good at the moment but I'm keeping my fingers crossed when I say it!

Keep me posted! There are not many of us on here who have a meningioma (we are so lucky!!) so it would be good to share the journey with someone.

  • Hi Sally - I hope you don't mind me emailing you a few months after your last message. I'm Andy, and have just been diagnosed with a meningioma in my left forehead. The neurosurgeon who gave me the shocking news recommneds an operation to remove it, even though he thinks it may have been there for years. He also said I could wait and see, but that I would need to have it removed sooner or later. I said I would have to think about it, and have been trying to make up my mind for the last week.

I was wondering how you got on with the questions you had with your consultant. I'm trying to get another appointment with him because most of what he said after he gave me the news went in one ear and out the other.

    Thanks

    Andy

  • Hi there I'm new to the forum having just got out of hospital with viral meningitis and a meninigioma......I'm waiting to see neurologist and have mri scan but ct scan showed up a small meningioma and that's about all the information I have! The doctors tried to say don't worry but I'm 34 with two small children, went into hospital because of an impossible headache, vision issues, sickness and feeling terrible! On Wednesday I was told about the meningioma and Thursday viral meningitis so my head is mush!

  • Hi

i have now had my meningioma removed. The op was fine! If you want any info about it, don't hesitate to contact me.

  • Hi Debs.  Just posted you on another thread but it is good to see you are doing so well - great news! Is meningioma in any way linked to meningitis?  My daughter had viral meningitis around 3yrs ago and has made a GP appt this week because she is getting a lot of headaches and finding her memory and mental skills are really bad. She had laser eye surgery about 2yrs ago which worked fantastically and then suddenly last year her eyesight deteriorated quite quickly again which is quite unusual according to the optician.

Hadn't occurred to me until I saw your thread.  Thanks honey and keep safe xx

  • Hi

No I don't think it's linked to meningitis. They don't know what causes it but I have never seen meningitis mentioned in anything I've read.

Hope that makes you feel a bit better!
