Virgin throat Cancer sufferer

Hi all

I have just been diagnosed with Throat Cancer (28th April) and although at the moment Docs can only find the secondary site (right neck lymph node), they are still looking for the Primary - I've had my CT and PET CT scan done and nothing found, so I am now going in for multiple biospsies to find that prime site

Although this started off very rocky I have been told that its not only treatable but cureable, so I suppose i am luckier than some on here and aware of it

I am a very positive person and am just taking this all as it comes to me .... as I am sure you are all aware there is a lot to take in when you are first diagnosed

I think the biggest problem with me at the moment is i dont feel ill .. I just had a sore throat in Feb, which did not go, my glands were up, but one never went down so went to the docs who sent me to the hospital and within a few weeks i was diagnosed

I am sure at some point the treatment is going to hit me but i am still unaware to what extent ... and i know its different for everyone

Whilst Docs are still trying to find the prime site I am getting close to starting my Radio and Chemo Therapy for 6 weeks .. I have also been told that the Chemo should get rid of the secondary tumour in my neck lymph node so they are hoping not to operate and i wont lose my hair ... but i will deal with that one when i get there

As I said, I have difficulty defining how ill i really am (not as bad as some of you on here i know) I still play Squash, Football and take my wife Salsa dancing, but i guess whilst going through the treatment i am going to have to slow things down and look after myself

So i just wondered if any of you on here had gone through similar treatment and if there any advice you would like to offer

From what i can see constipation appears to be a big issue and some suffer with terrible sickness

But from the point of starting my treat whats my rollacoster to recovery

Oh and any information about having a peg fitted and how that works and for how long going forward would be appreciated

onwards and upwards

  • A hat trick of good news from Vatch, Gill and Guzzle. Well done all of you!

    Debbie

  • Hi Debbie, how are you? Any sun tips? Regards, Gary

  • Hi guzzle

Last year, I was really careful.  I kept out of the sun as much as possible. I wore factor 30 and a thin scarf on my neck.

This summer, I'm more relaxed about it and I just wear factor 30 all the time. I haven't burnt or gone red at all.

Glad to hear that you are continuing to do well. Do you feel ok mentally? I felt a bit down when it ended. Is your memory ok? Mine was shocking for some time!

    Debbie

  • Deb, fought against feeling  down by touring around UK catching up with friends and doing a bit of walking/cycling/running but I can see how you could get down away from treatment. IM lucky so far I can eat well and didn't need a peg etc. IM now fearing up for holiday then back to work. I think having too much time on your hands isn't such a good thing!

  • hi all how are we all doing

well i have just finished week two and its all going ok ... minor ups and downs

my blog is up to date with all sorts of things ... gammaraygary.wordpress .com

biggest problems i have had this week has been :

    1. the fatigue has kicked in and having little sleeps all over the place

    2. constipation is up and down ...more up than down at the mo if i am honest, but i think thats the chemo so im upping my senna tablets to 3 a night over chemo days.. appear to does the trick... eventually

    3. taste ... its just gone and its really hit me ... still getting stuff down but not be able to taste is a really killer

Also Im not sure if its was the same for you but i appear to pick up a bit after my chemo so weekends i am buzzing around ...or feel like i want to... then i go down a bit during the week ... funny that one

I am still working at the moment ...only going in Mon, Tue and Wed morning as my treatments are late in the afternoon

So how are we all doing.... all looking to get a suntan by the looks of it .... but all on the mend which is music to my ears and keeps me going at the moment

    i am st

  • Hi Vatch,

Fatigue and constipation were the highlights of last summer for me! I found the constipation difficult to deal with - the medication I was given for it tended to take me from one extreme to the other (if you catch my drift). If it's any comfort, my taste did eventually come back for most things, although I don't enjoy sweet things like I used to.

Well done for keeping the work going - I hope that things continue like that. I remember that once I was past half-way I felt that I'd passed a bit of a milestone. I didn't suffer too much with burns but I did put lots of cream on each night which probably helped in that respect.

    Good luck mate.

    Simon.

  • Hi Vatch, some pain meds can bung you up so keep regular with laxitives - the balance is not going OTT and getting dehydrated. Hydration and nutrition important. Just treat eating as a job to get calories in. If patients lost too much they kept them in! That was motivation enough for me. Have a read of Theo Pywowarczuk The Radioactive Man blog on word press. A good practical guide and just like you a nice bloke. Things get better. Ive been for a run today and am about to nip out for s couple of beers. Holiday next month. Two months post treatment. Grind it out mate! Gary

  • hi Simon, Gary, Nic Debs and Gil

how are we all doing good i hope?

Sun is out and i hope not causing you all too many problems .... get that factor fifty on peeps

Once again i think i am doing ok ... my food intake has just gone this week which has lead to me loosing half a stone in a week ...not good

So I subsidising with the PEG feed at the mo as i try to find foods that i can eat .... egg a bit of fish and a lot of soup at the moment.

I am still managing to drive 45 minutes to work in the morning ... but on Mon-Wed and by the time I get home on Wed I am shattered.

The machines have been up and down this week which has meant i not getting home until 8pm from my 5pm appointment ... but thats life

My blog is up to date gammaraygary.wordpress.com

And thanks Gary yes i have been following Theo on his blog ... inspirational

Overall i have to say im doing ok ... I know at the weekends i am high from the steroids and Monday I will come back down again, but i can still swallow (as long as i am drinking gallons of cool green tea) my tongue ulcers have cleared up and my neck is starting to redden, but its not itchy or sore and im dabbing copious amounts of E45 on it...so i cant complain at the mo

So update me all, too much about me what abut you lot

    Gaz

  • Gaz, just been to see the giant puppets in Liverpool. Its hot!Glad to hear your doing well mate. Will read blog. Also read Theos. Wish I had the patience. You've nearly cracked this buddy. Regards, Gaz

  • Well done Vatch!

You've broken the back of this and you sound in better shape than I was at this stage - hopefully this bodes well for the future. Take care this week as it was at about this point that things started to go downhill for me.

    How I miss the E45!

    Simon.
