Kidney cancer

Hi

I'm new to this forum. My 39 year son has just found out that he has kidney cancer. It has spread from his kidney into the large artery and is heading both ways. He has had an MRI scan and thankfully it hasn't spread to anywhere else and can be operated on during which we understand he will have to go on bypass. He hopefully will be having his surgery very soon. It would be lovely to hear from anyone else who may have gone through this operation. He has a five  year old daughter and would dearly love to see her grow up. He is upbeat but has his days of why me. Luckily it has been only 2 and half weeks since he developed symptoms and being told. Many thanks.

  • I'm so very sorry Dan,

I can't really help you as I have not had this type of cancer but I'm hoping that by replying your post will be pushed to the top of the pile so that people with experience will see it.

Good luck to you and your son.

  • Thanks for your kind words Jan. the trouble is that this type of cancer it isn't so common but we will keep going and hopefully he will get through it all.

Looking on this forum there are many brave people out there fighting and it makes me feel humble reading their stories.

  • Hello Dan,

I just wanted to say hello and welcome you to the forum and hopefully you will get in touch with others here who have had this sort of surgery or has experience of kidney cancer. We do have a section of information about surgery for kidney cancer on our website. I also noticed a couple of recent threads on kidney cancer which might be of interest to you. Archer, for example, asked our nurses about recovery time after kidney removal which you can read here - you will also notice in this thread Thistle's reply and detailed personal account of kidney cancer sugery so feel free to respond to them. Your son's surgery may perhaps not be quite the same kind as described on that thread but it can always help to talk to someone else with kidney cancer.

I hope this helps and that you meet some people here who can relate to your son's situation.

    Best wishes,

  • I too have just been diagnosed with kidney cancer due to have my left kidney removed In two weeks time this my third cancer and I feel very daunted and frightened about having to go through surgery yet again and maybe further treatment and also wondering how the removal of my kidney is going to affect me it all seems too much to bear at times so hoping chatting with someone else who knows what I am going through will help best wishes t you

So sorry not to have replied sooner to you.I am so sorry to hear about your continued fight with cancer. It's good to be able to chat to someone else who is going through what my son is. He is seeing the surgeon in Leicester on Thursday and hopefully they should give him a date for his operation. It should be by the end of the month. What you have both got is not a very common cancer it seems so not much info out there. They say you can get by with one kidney. You have been through an awful lot already but don't give up keep thinking positive. Please keep in contact and you will both get through this. Take care and best wishes to you
