Nasopharyngeal Cancer Survivor.

Hello everyone,

I beat Nasopharangeal Cancer 17 years ago, in fact today is the anniversary of being told I was clear. I know there are only 2 or 3 other sufferers in here so all I want to say is:-

YOU CAN BEAT BIG C TOO!!!

Hope to hear from fellow nasop sufferers soon as I have NEVER met one in 17 years of having been affected by it.

Hear soon

Ron

  • Hello Ron, Thanks for your post. Over the summer a close family member was diagnosed with NPC but thank to God he was all clear couple of months ago. He complains of severe dry month and was wondering how long will that last and and remedies please
  • Hello Atoabban, I still suffer from dry mouth as my saliva glands were blown up. I have tried various things but only thing that really works is a bottle of water!!! How mny radios and chemo did your family memnber have and how many secondary tumours? They will be under hospital for up to 5 years for checks etc. In my case it was 8 years!!! Im alive
  • Ron. This a co-incidence. I quite literally have just logged on after having neoplasms removed from all four sinuses on the right side of my face. I don't know the prognosis as yet.. since the surgery was quite literally a few hour ago. (yesterday night). But yes these cancers are rare.. and congratulations on 17 years. Did you undergo any surgeries? If so which ones? Afy
  • Hello Afy.

The only surgery I received was a biopsy of tumour in nasopharanx. That was all. I received 38 radiotherapies and 4 Methotrexate chemos

    Im alive

PS On Dec 5th I will have my 21st Clear Birthday!!!!

  • Hi ron, I just wanted to ask, my husband also had nasopharyngeal ca and he is in remission now. Do you have any health regimen or are you doing something special to keep yourself healthy and cancer free? I am sometimes getting anxiety, i dont know where to start just so i can make sure he stays healthy. Please let me know. Congratulations on being cancer free for 17 years!!! Thank you and best regard, Carla

  • Dear Aboutcarla. I am happy to hear that your husband is in remission. I have been free from NPC since 2004 (14 years now) Apart from side effects of dry mouth and hearing loss, I am living a very health and happy life. Soon after I was told that the cancer was in remission, I refocused my attention away from the cancer. I started my University studies at 33 years in 2004/5. I kept myself mentally strong and completed my degree in 2009. I then started an e-commerce business working from home and it kept me busy but happy because I am doing what I like. I have since completed my Masters degree and PGCE. I intend to start a PhD soon. I can tell you that if you do what you enjoy most in your life, it will give you that psychological stamina to live a life like a person who never suffered cancer. Your hubby needs to set new goals and work on achieving them, hence forgetting worrying about the recurrence of that cancer. He will enjoy each day like any other person because he will be working towards what he wants, hence most of the time he will be focused on achieving his set goals than the recurring cancer. That will make you and your hubby live a worry free and very happy life.
  • Hi. My son is about to embark on 7 weeks of radiotherapy and 3 lots of chemo, has had 2 chemo already. He has stage 3 nasopharyngeal cancer which has spread to his lymph nodes and glands.  I am so scared for him, the side effects petrify me.  Did anyone seek counselling?  I really feel he needs to speak with someone, it is all bottled up inside him and he is so scared.  He is due to have a PEG fitted soon although he says he does he does not want one, has been strongly advised to have it.any advise etc would be good.  Thank you

  • Hi Carolyn68

Sorry to hear your son has unfortunately been diagnosed with cancer and you are going through sychva tough time. My husband was diagnosed with squamous cell cancer of the tonsils with metastasis in his lymph nodes in December 2015. He had 6 weeks of Chemoradiation- 5 cycles of Cistplatin and 30 fractions if VMAT radiotherapy (5 days on 2 off) Unfortunately this didnt clear all the cancer so he then had a neck dissection as well. Just to say that the treatment is tough but you can get through it and come out the other side- my hubby has been in remission for 18 months and although he has a few residual side effects we are looking to the future.

Wishing your son and you loads if best wishes and if you gave any questions then ask away.

  • Hi, how’s your son getting on now? My 30 year old son has recently been diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer and starts 9 weeks pre chemo on Friday,  it seems the pre-chemo is a major help with avoiding relapse which is important, then 2 week break and 7 weeks chemoradiotherapy. He lives and works in Australia and is on his own, I hope to go over on about 11 weeks when he begins the Chemoradiothearpy. I’d just like to hear how your son’s holding up and how the treatment is going. Thanks
