Introduce yourself on Cancer Chat

Hello everyone

Today marks a year since we launched the new Cancer Chat, how time flies! In the last 12 months we've shared our stories, laughed and cried and become a real community so I thought it was about time that  we introduced ourselves to you properly.

I'm Sarah and I'm the Cancer Chat manager. I have managed other online communities before coming to Cancer Research UK and am a cancer survivor myself. I went through my treatment in 2009, and so I know how helpful and supportive Cancer Chat can be from personal experience.

There are three moderators who work with me, Renata, Jane and Lucie. All three moderators juggle their Cancer Chat duties with their roles as busy mums and work different shifts throughout the week to ensure that Cancer Chat is appropriately moderated. They help direct members to appropriate information on our main Cancer Research UK website and liaise closely with the specialist nurse team to help answer questions or offer support. Above all, they ensure that Cancer Chat is a safe, secure and welcoming place where anyone affected by cancer can come and ask questions, share experiences and meet people who are also affected by cancer.

We thought it would be fun to tell you a few interesting facts and also share our new avatars which you'll be seeing whenever we are online.

Sarah - is a 70s music addict

Renata - is a mad George Michael fan

Jane -  is a journalist

Lucie - is French

Now it's your turn! We'd love to know more about you, so we've set up this new topic area where you can introduce yourselves and say hello to new members. Don't forget everything is public so don't disclose anything too personal!!

Best Wishes

Sarah

  • Hello I am 67yro male I have been diagnosed with Cancer on my Vocal Chords. This was removed on Monday by Laser. What after effects should I expect ?  At the momment I have a very sore Throat & cant talk properly. My voice seems to be a whisper.

  • I am new to this kind of thing, but recently had diagnosis of squamous cell cancer around the anal region, I am going to start chemo and radiotherapy soon, but not sure what to expect and the internet is full of strange things! I am a little scared but just want to get on with it. Reading some of the things on this site is good but does frighten me on what going to happen to me.

Can anyone help with what I can expect from chemo and radiotherapy, what does success look like, doctors mentions 70% success rate, sounds very good but what happens to the other 30%. Help

  • Hi washtub and Ranvir

It's nice to meet you both. Feel free to set up your own discussions with a title which will make it nice and easy for others with similar experiences to find you. Don't forget too that you can contact our nurses with any questions.

You can telephone them on freephone: 0808 800 4040 and they are in the office Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. They also have an online enquiry page and an Ask The Nurses section on Cancer Chat.

    Best wishes

  • Hello Ants29,

Welcome to the forum and thanks for introducing yourself. Sorry to hear your friends are not talking anymore - it may be as you said that they don't know what to say. I can assure you though that you will find great friends here who will understand only too well what you are going through. Why don't you start a new thread on the forum and share your story? You can find out more about how to start a new discussion here. Our topic areas are changing at the moment but I am sure you will still find your way around the forum and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask us!

We look forward to reading your thread and full story!

    Best wishes,

    Lucie, Cancer Chat Moderator
