Introduce yourself on Cancer Chat

Hello everyone

Today marks a year since we launched the new Cancer Chat, how time flies! In the last 12 months we've shared our stories, laughed and cried and become a real community so I thought it was about time that  we introduced ourselves to you properly.

I'm Sarah and I'm the Cancer Chat manager. I have managed other online communities before coming to Cancer Research UK and am a cancer survivor myself. I went through my treatment in 2009, and so I know how helpful and supportive Cancer Chat can be from personal experience.

There are three moderators who work with me, Renata, Jane and Lucie. All three moderators juggle their Cancer Chat duties with their roles as busy mums and work different shifts throughout the week to ensure that Cancer Chat is appropriately moderated. They help direct members to appropriate information on our main Cancer Research UK website and liaise closely with the specialist nurse team to help answer questions or offer support. Above all, they ensure that Cancer Chat is a safe, secure and welcoming place where anyone affected by cancer can come and ask questions, share experiences and meet people who are also affected by cancer.

We thought it would be fun to tell you a few interesting facts and also share our new avatars which you'll be seeing whenever we are online.

Sarah - is a 70s music addict

Renata - is a mad George Michael fan

Jane -  is a journalist

Lucie - is French

Now it's your turn! We'd love to know more about you, so we've set up this new topic area where you can introduce yourselves and say hello to new members. Don't forget everything is public so don't disclose anything too personal!!

Best Wishes

Sarah

  • Hi

Usually I am easy going and not a mess or anxious, without sounding arrogant, I'm the one people rely on and I sort stuff out that needs sorting!

Right now I am all those things but have to hold it together.

I realise through the haze of it all I need to talk so hoped this would be help.

I feel really uncomfortable sharing MY worries and MY feelings when my Mum is the one facing certain death.  But I know I need help to support her, I'm on the edge of a breakdown so here I am.

X formerly happy go lucky me!

  • Hi Islaskye,

Welcome to the forum, and sorry you've had to find us at all.

Hope hubby is a bit more comfortable now and all goes well on Friday.

Please come back and tell us how you get on.....and feel free to come back anytime you want to ask questions, have a moan or even just for a cuppa and a chat - although you have to make your own tea.

Hope to hear from you soon

  • Hi Kinmiddle,

Welcome to you to.  I picked up on your post to Stevie34 and replied to that, but I've not followed your "story" but from this post I get the drift that it's your mum that's poorly.  Sometimes the supporting role can be difficult to, so like Islaskye the offer is there for you to come back and tell us how you are anytime, again you can make your own tea to.

Hope to hear from you soon

  • Hi

I'm new to this site too as I am only now able to discuss my health issues.  I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in my early 20s. Nine years ago having lost a huge amount of weight I was sent to hospital to be given intravenous steroids and was told I would be in for a couple of days....2 weeks later and having lost 3 stone and being 'fed' milky liquid through my neck, 2 blood transfusions... I had the whole of my large intestine removed, I was given 1 day notice of what a stoma was.  Like you I was overwhelmed and horrified. But having suffered for so long with pain etc I felt so much better.  My husband helped and supported me all the way by not asking too many questions.  Body image problems may take a while to deal with and practical matters - going to the loo in a public place etc will be hard at the beginning but hopefully not last too long.  I had my stoma reversed 6 years ago - something that I was extremely glad about.  I believe it is not always possible for this to happen and if the stoma is permanent there is a huge amount of support out there.  I hope your Husband continues to improve and you get good news on Friday.

PS the reason for being on the cancer site was to ask a question about skin cancer - 4 years 'clear' now - yeh

  • Hi my name is Tony and I'm in Cornwall. I'm a full time carer for my 29 yr old daughter who has a learning disability, and her future scares and worries me. I am going through the process of tests/confirmation of colon cancer having all the symptoms and I'm waiting for the Colonoscopy date. I do no smoke or drink but I am a little overweight so I'm working on that though I have dropped over half a stone since Xmas.

I'd welcome any coping straagies as I'm very isolated with no close family near me, and any advice on health foods/juices etc and or supplements would be much appreciated.

    Thanks guys.

  • Hello tjkernow,

I just wanted to welcome you to Cancer Chat. The waiting game must be very difficult for you and it is normal for you to be a little anxious while waiting for results. I know it is hard for you to do so, but try not to worry too much until you get your results and let us know when you find our more. In the meantime, if you want to chat to lovely people, this is a great place to meet others who know only too well what it's like to go through this agonizing wait. There are countless wonderful people here who can talk to you about colonoscopies and give you coping strategies. But one person that inevitably springs to my mind is another Tony, the amazing tonysong. You can read his story here. Feel free to drop him a line on his thread or to start your own thread. I am sure he will reply and that he will be happy to talk to another Tony!

    Best wishes,

  • Hi,

My name is David and I have been experiencing night sweats for 4 months. It seemed to start after dental work which continues to this day and there is more in store.

However, lots of fatigue and visits to doctor, diagnosed with depression (only thing left after negative blood tests), then for the past month I have had a sore throat and recently a very swollen gland of the right.

A vist to ENT department has found a mass on the base of tongue and I am scheduled for a biopsy......

Without jumping the gun, the symptoms todate do however add up, so I might be at the start of a difficult journey, any advice appreciated.

By the way, one of my symptoms associated witht the night sweats was my skin smell was funny, not nice.

Whenever I mention this I get funny looks, Has anyone experienced this?
