Introduce yourself on Cancer Chat

Hello everyone

Today marks a year since we launched the new Cancer Chat, how time flies! In the last 12 months we've shared our stories, laughed and cried and become a real community so I thought it was about time that  we introduced ourselves to you properly.

I'm Sarah and I'm the Cancer Chat manager. I have managed other online communities before coming to Cancer Research UK and am a cancer survivor myself. I went through my treatment in 2009, and so I know how helpful and supportive Cancer Chat can be from personal experience.

There are three moderators who work with me, Renata, Jane and Lucie. All three moderators juggle their Cancer Chat duties with their roles as busy mums and work different shifts throughout the week to ensure that Cancer Chat is appropriately moderated. They help direct members to appropriate information on our main Cancer Research UK website and liaise closely with the specialist nurse team to help answer questions or offer support. Above all, they ensure that Cancer Chat is a safe, secure and welcoming place where anyone affected by cancer can come and ask questions, share experiences and meet people who are also affected by cancer.

We thought it would be fun to tell you a few interesting facts and also share our new avatars which you'll be seeing whenever we are online.

Sarah - is a 70s music addict

Renata - is a mad George Michael fan

Jane -  is a journalist

Lucie - is French

Now it's your turn! We'd love to know more about you, so we've set up this new topic area where you can introduce yourselves and say hello to new members. Don't forget everything is public so don't disclose anything too personal!!

Best Wishes

Sarah

  • Hi Mermaid

  • Hi, My name is Laura Block, and last month I was just diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer.  The gave me a hysterectomy on December 8th and said they got 95% of it and the rest they will get with chemotherapy.  I am going to need plenty of support.  I am very nervous about the treatments.  I am so glad I joined this site.

  • Hi Laura and welcome,

You've come to the right place for support, we've all been through some sort of "trial" whether directly or as the other side of the coin.

Ask your questions or rant away, there will always be someone who'll get back to you, and you won't be long in realising who's around during thee day and who's the nightowls.

I hope you're keeping ok, when does your chemo start?

    S x

  • Hi Everyone, I've just registered but have read quite a few comments. I was diagnosed with bowel cancer (via screening) middle of November (Stage 2  T4); have had my op successfully - surgeon 'got it all', no lymph nodes affected but they could only find four. There were some cancer cells in surrounding blood vessels but hopefully all taken away. However, they have recommended chemo and I'm not so sure as some people on here haven't had it and are fine. Do I REALLY need it? What do people think - would be grateful for any comments. Thanks.

  • Hi. My name is Aya. I am an international student and currently studying at the university. I'm glad that I found this site. I have a pituitary adenoma, which I'm trying to treat. Now my pills are running out, which I`ve brought with me dostinex (cabergoline). I was in GP, but I do not know when they will appoint me to an endocrinologist, and moreover pharmacies do not stock my medicine without receipt. How can I do? Can you have any advice? Sorry, for my english, i need help.

  • Hi Rowena

Welcome to Cancer Chat. Fell free to start a new discussion raising your concerns about chemotherapy. There are many here who I hope will turn up shortly to talk to you about their experiences.

    Best wishes

    Jane

  • Hi Aya

Is there a welfare officer at your university who you can talk to about this? There is normally a person who students can talk to about any problems at all, including medical ones.

    Welcome to Cancer Chat
