Introduce yourself on Cancer Chat

Hello everyone

Today marks a year since we launched the new Cancer Chat, how time flies! In the last 12 months we've shared our stories, laughed and cried and become a real community so I thought it was about time that  we introduced ourselves to you properly.

I'm Sarah and I'm the Cancer Chat manager. I have managed other online communities before coming to Cancer Research UK and am a cancer survivor myself. I went through my treatment in 2009, and so I know how helpful and supportive Cancer Chat can be from personal experience.

There are three moderators who work with me, Renata, Jane and Lucie. All three moderators juggle their Cancer Chat duties with their roles as busy mums and work different shifts throughout the week to ensure that Cancer Chat is appropriately moderated. They help direct members to appropriate information on our main Cancer Research UK website and liaise closely with the specialist nurse team to help answer questions or offer support. Above all, they ensure that Cancer Chat is a safe, secure and welcoming place where anyone affected by cancer can come and ask questions, share experiences and meet people who are also affected by cancer.

We thought it would be fun to tell you a few interesting facts and also share our new avatars which you'll be seeing whenever we are online.

Sarah - is a 70s music addict

Renata - is a mad George Michael fan

Jane -  is a journalist

Lucie - is French

Now it's your turn! We'd love to know more about you, so we've set up this new topic area where you can introduce yourselves and say hello to new members. Don't forget everything is public so don't disclose anything too personal!!

Best Wishes

Sarah

  • Hi All

My name is Helen - I am originally from Sheffield and was diagnosed 8 years ago with Breast Cancer at 31 years old - lucky to have had a partial removal and then further treatment of Radiation and Chemo.  I live in Holland and have had all my treatment here.  I used this site when I first was disagnosed and from some strange feeling felt I needed to come back .... who knows ...  Today I went for my yearly MRI and Mammo and will learn the results next week.  I wonder if many of you go through the same thing as I do - playing out the "what if" conversations?

Wishing you all gentle times and strength!

    Helen x

  • Hi DutchHelen

Welcome back. It's good to hear you are getting on well and we wish you luck with your results next week. Bubbles, who has just been discharged after 10 years of follow ups, has posted about what it can feel like in the run up to receiving a yearly check up and your results. You can read her thoughts here.

    Best wishes

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat, Blowe44.

Good luck for Thursday and let us know how you get on. You could start your own discussion if you feel like it, so people with experience of prostate cancer can easily see your post and they may be able to respond to your questions.

  • hello, my name is kilmara,  I am new in this site, i am from panama, i am 54 years old,  I am living in yonkers, NY, i have three children, my son Juan (tomorrow is his birthday) 32 years old, my daugther Jermy, she is 30 and my youngest daughter Michaela, she is 27.  I have 5 grandchildren, four boys and my only granddaughter. I was dx with stomach cancer on June this year.  it was malapractice medical.  they removed my all stomach, it look sexy, no more big belly, but the bad part, i have to eat two spoon of meal every hour.  Before, my weight was 115 pound, and 4'11,  now i am 84 pounds. The size zero still big for me, when i was size 4-6.  it made me depress and mad, but thanks to my God, i am still alive. I want to changes opinions, ideas, advices to other people with the same conditions. I learned with this illness to evaluate more the life, to appreciated what i have, what can i do for other people and believe more in my GOD, i prayed to him so much to save me from this illness, because the only family i have in this country is my children and my grandchildren, we are very close family and took me a big courage to tell my children about my cancer.  I was thinking, if i die, my family will be so depress and they will not be the same children i raised with sacrifies and by my self, without no father figure around, because i divorced they father when my son was 7 years old.  My son is schizophrenic and last week he told me" mamy, if you die, i will die with you", it made me so sad, because he is the only one needs me more.  My daughters they are married and have kids, with a good job, so I was praying to my God to save me, to give me my second chance of life because my son needs me. I am so sorry for my bad spelling or gramatical mistake.  I hope i could meet people that can understand my pain and depression.

  • Hi Bishy,

    Welcome to Cancer Chat.

Waiting for results is always a frightening time.

There are lots of friendly people here who have been in similar situations to you and I'm sure they'll be able to offer you advice and support.

(It might help you get more replies if you start your own thread, or post onto an existing cervical cancer thread).

    Best wishes

  • HI

Welcome to the site, I'd think no sign of blood would be a positive, but maybe one of the boys will be along soon to advise you further.

Hang on in there and let us know how you get on.

  • Hi, I'm 35 a busy mum of three (one special needs) also love animals so have rehomed 3 cats, a hamster and a rabbit (yes i am mad) I have registered as my dad whose 75 was diagnosed with Lung cancer on september 23rd this year, it had already spread to his liver, lymph nodes and spine, he is a fighter he has been admitted twice had his lung drained, got over infections so far, he had a dose of radiotherapy just three weeks after being diagnosed to reduce the pressure on his spine mainly!  And he has told the specialists that he is having chemo even though they thought he was too weak,  He had his second dose last week and so far apart from hiccups and being even more tired not any problems, I've read page after page of websites looking for information, thought it be good to chat to other relatives/patients about my concerns!  Thanks Liz
