Introduce yourself on Cancer Chat

Hello everyone

Today marks a year since we launched the new Cancer Chat, how time flies! In the last 12 months we've shared our stories, laughed and cried and become a real community so I thought it was about time that  we introduced ourselves to you properly.

I'm Sarah and I'm the Cancer Chat manager. I have managed other online communities before coming to Cancer Research UK and am a cancer survivor myself. I went through my treatment in 2009, and so I know how helpful and supportive Cancer Chat can be from personal experience.

There are three moderators who work with me, Renata, Jane and Lucie. All three moderators juggle their Cancer Chat duties with their roles as busy mums and work different shifts throughout the week to ensure that Cancer Chat is appropriately moderated. They help direct members to appropriate information on our main Cancer Research UK website and liaise closely with the specialist nurse team to help answer questions or offer support. Above all, they ensure that Cancer Chat is a safe, secure and welcoming place where anyone affected by cancer can come and ask questions, share experiences and meet people who are also affected by cancer.

We thought it would be fun to tell you a few interesting facts and also share our new avatars which you'll be seeing whenever we are online.

Sarah - is a 70s music addict

Renata - is a mad George Michael fan

Jane -  is a journalist

Lucie - is French

Now it's your turn! We'd love to know more about you, so we've set up this new topic area where you can introduce yourselves and say hello to new members. Don't forget everything is public so don't disclose anything too personal!!

Best Wishes

Sarah

  • Hi

I'm Sharon, 38 year old mum of an 11-year old. What a lovely site this is, such nice people to listen to and take advice from. Just waiting for test results and more tests still to go, my doctor is great, have an urgent referrel for an Endoscopy shortly, very nervous wait!! Fingers crossed it's all going to be alright

    Sharon.

  • Hi, My name is Jan but also known as Griffo. I care for my 89 year old aunt who has just been diagnosed with a brain tumour. She had a stroke about 10 years ago which left her with severe weakness on her right side. I noticed a couple of weeks ago there was something wrong with her. Whilst she was in hospital last week ( infected leg ulcer) they did a CT and MRI scan which has shown she has a tumour and it has spread to approx 1/3rd of her brain. I am in total shock and worried what is now going to happen. She cannot walk, stand and communication is very limited. She lives on her own and I am worried how she is going to cope. xx

  • Hello Sharon,

Welcome on Cancer Chat. We are glad you like it here. One thing people always say on our site is that waiting can be the most difficult part as you don't yet know what you are dealing with so it is normal to be nervous. We are keeping our fingers (and toes!) crossed with you. Keep in touch and let us know when you have your results.

  • Hello Jan,

It must be very hard for you to see your aunt go through all this. I hope your aunt will be looked after well and receive appropriate care. Feel free to start your own thread on Cancer Chat and I am sure others will be along to talk to you and hopefully alleviate your worries.  You mention you are known as Griffo - that is one great nickname!

  • hey everyone.

    I'm a bloke...

been here pretty much siince the start of the chat forum thingy.

I watch this regularly, but rarely post unless i think i have something to contribute....or something makes me annoyed (there are one or two topics here designed to get a rise from people..)

    as for the moderators...nice avatars..:-)

I saw a pic of moderator sarah on here a while back (she's a cutie in real life, but shhhh don't say anything in case she hears)

  • Imabloke is a bloke, and I'm ... an expat!  My husband was diagnosed Stage IV colon cancer in January 2010 and has been on chemotherapy on and off ever since; he's also continued working... Our grown up children are in the UK but at least we have a wonderful cat (who looks so much like my profile pic that it's spooky). I find cancer chat really helpful as where we live the doctors are not very forthcoming, and there's nothing like Macmillan nurses or the sort of help you get via your GP etc.  It's good to know that we are not alone.  My husband is more the stoical type and has no interest in chatrooms but I really find it so helpful.  Thanks to everyone, the posters and the moderators; if any 'lurkers' are reading this, you're very welcome too, many of us read the site for a while before we decide to set up a profile.

  • Hi expat99,

Thanks for introducing yourself. It's really interesting to read a bit of background on everyone, especially our regulars!

I'm glad you're finding Cancer Chat helpful and you are right about 'lurkers' - lots of people come to the site and decide not to post, but they find the information posted by youself and other users really valuable.

Best wishes to you and your husband,

    Renata

  • Hi Everyone,

I first came on this forum in June when my mam didn't have long to live, I guess I needed somwhere to let off steam, my own thread on here is called "just want to scream", and through it i've made some amazing friends who helped me in ways I can't describe.  Although I don't post on here as often as I used to I still pop on most days to see how everyone is getting on, My mam died on the 3rd July and i'm still trying to come to terms with it, some days i'm fine and then others i'm a complete wreck,

    Best wishes to everyone,

    Lynn x

  • Hi Renata et al,

What a fantastic response to this thread - to date 39 replies and 965 views. As a forum member since June 2008 I have posted to threads in support of members and also have been supported. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that this forum would be so successful. I have been involved with Cancer Research UK since 2001 and participated in numerous fundraising events and volunteer in the local shop.

I thought everyone could access members' profiles but in case not - this is me - a retired RGN living in the Nort East of England, I was widowed last year (thank you all for your support at that time) I now devote more time to voluntary work to keep busy. I still access the forum daily but do not post too much as everyone seems so well supported but do chip in when I feel the need!!

My one 'beef' about posts which ask for help/support or for those doing research and then do not have the decency to reply - not even accessing the forum again .

Well done Cancer Research UK - Cancer Chat and all those involved before going 'live' and since. Rodis.
