I haven't a clue what to do or say - I just found out I have stage 4 cancer

Hi there, my name is Paul, I'm 62 and live in Mid Wales. I have literally been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. I saw my Oncologist last week and he showed me the results of the pet scan. There is radio therapy being organised for my shoulder but I also have cancer in my lungs and in the kidney bed where they removed my kidney jn June 23.  I have been given information on 3 different types of treatment, but I'm at a loss as to which one to use.

  • Has the oncologist said which might be best?

  • Hi Paul,

That depends on your personality, time of life and appetite for risk.
I’m a bit of a nerd and asked for the probable outcomes in percentage terms for each option - including doing nothing.
You could always fall back on the old “if you were me, which would you choose?”

    Good luck.
    Dave

  • Hi Sniffey,

A very warm welcome to the forum.

I am so sorry to hear about your diagnosis. We were in a similar situation a few years ago, when, after battling breast cancer for 12 years, my mum was diagnosed with metastases in her brain, bones, liver and lungs. At that time there were no suitable treatments available for her. Fortunately, you are now being given a choice. It is impossible for you to decide which treatment would be best for you. Even doctors, who have studied the vagaries of cancer for several years, find it hard to decide on the most suitable option. Place your faith in your care team and ask them for advice. No question is too silly or insignificant to ask and you will find that you will feel more empowered, as you get to know more about your condition.

I have since had 2 bouts of breast cancer myself and found that the best way to deal with it was to ask the medical experts for their advice and guidance throughout my journey. That started 16 years ago and they have given me all those extra years for which I am eternally grateful.

Please keep in touch and let us know what you decide. We are always here for you.

I sincerely hope that, whatever decision you reach, it turns out to be the right one for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
