Colon cancer.

Hi, on April 24th 2024 I was diagnosed with colon cancer. I had a colon resection opp, but didn't need a colostomy bag nor chemotherapy. I had lots of pain from the beginning, even when I was on the ward, and struggled to get out of bed while on the ward. I was later told by one of the colonoscopy nurses I had a hernia, but she didn't really explain. I complained each and everytime I attended a nurse visit. Later I visited my GP, who said that I did indeed have a hernia. I requested a second opinion regarding this hernia, and attended another hospital, where an ultrasound was carried out, which verified I had a large umbilical hernia, but at the time simply because I had soreness in the area of the scar, and as it meant reopening the scar I chose not to have it. I have now chosen to attend a different hospital to complete my cancer care treatment, I am due for a telephone call from the colonoscopy nurse from my chosen hospital. My abdomen is still swollen, and I still cant fit into my previous clothes that I wore before my opp. I feel that the feeling in my stomach, is responsible for my BP increasing and my GP is prescribing a drug to reduce it. I havent a clue what I should do, as I feel this is only masking a symptom. Two weeks ago I sent for and recieved a fitness test, which I did and returned if, good news for me was it was clear. I was just wondering has anyone else had a problem like this

  • Hi Yogiorbear and a warm welcome to Cancer Chat,

Thank you for coming here and sharing the story of your colon cancer diagnosis. You did well to request a second opinion regarding this hernia and I am glad that they looked into it more closely with the ultrasound they carried out but I can completely understand why you didn't feel you could have the operation at the time if it meant reopening a scar. I hope that you won't have to wait too long for the telephone call from the colonoscopy nurse and that they will be able to tell you more about what to expect.

It must be difficult for you to have to deal with this swollen abdomen and the effects it may have had on your blood pressure. I am glad that the GP is prescribing something to reduce the blood pressure - it's always a good idea to keep it under control and well done for completing this fitness test and it sounds like the results were good!

I hope that you will hear from other members of our community who have been in your position before and that they will pop by and share their story with you. We also have a cancer nurse helpline you are welcome to ring if you need any guidance or advice on anything - you can call them on this free number 0808 800 4040 Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

Keep us updated if you get a chance on what the colonoscopy nurse tells you.I hope the phone call goes well and that you get a bit more clarity soon.

    Best wishes,
