To remove or monitor, thyroid surgery?

I am 42, female and I didn’t go in thinking that I had any sort of cancer,  just lower thyroid hormones and all the symptoms of that, BUT they found 5mm thy3a nodule: so instead of any solutions for the symptoms I have this new heavy question: remove or monitor? Please, please,  anyone that has hade a thyroid lobectomy please share post-op experience, did you have to take Levothyroxine? How has that gone? Did anything get better upon removal or is it just the relief of knowing that you don’t have that ? Anymore.

  • Welcomed to the forum LilySeeyah although I'm really sorry to hear about the nodule that's been found on your thyroid, and the tricky decision you now face of whether to have it monitored or removed.

Hopefully some of our members who have faced a similar decision with their thyroid nodules will share their experiences with you soon but if it would help to talk any of this through, you can give our cancer nurses a call on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they will do all they can to support you and answer your questions.

I hope this information that we have on our website about thyroid surgery will be useful as well.

Treatment decisions are always hard but I'm sure when you have all the information you need and weighed up all the pros and cons of both, you'll be able to come to a decision that's right for you.

    Kind regards,
