My cancer life story.

I am a 70 year young man, for decades I have suffered from SOB, shortness of breath. After many doctors visits and hospital visits and tests they decided I had an underactive thyroid and put me on levothyroxine many years ago. My SOB continued and progressively became worse, so my Wife sent me off to the doctor again, I was sent to RD&E Exeter and after many more tests and a bone marrow biopsy in December 2024 my haematologist told me I had MDS, or myelodysplastic syndrom, I said, oh so it's not cancer then? He said well, yes it is and you have probably had it for many years! Lightbulb moment! He also said my prognosis with my cancer score gave me a life expectancy of Oct 2026. I explored the stem cell transplant route at Derriford Hospital Plymouth, but they said the chemo alone, due to my age and health was a 40% mortality rate. So I have been on twice weekly injections of Filgrastim and Darbepoetin. I have had two blood transfusions but am still tired and my haematologist thinks that I may be developing AML Acute myelo leukemia, so I am having another marrow biopsy this Monday coming to find out if it has progressed. But .......... I am still happy! I am alive for now and trying to enjoy the time I have left with my Wife holidaying in the UK. I also love making models, so I keep myself busy.

Love and best wishes to you all out there who are going through similar situations. Keep your chin up and BE HAPPY

  • Hello Pete

Well done for getting through all the treatments and still have your chin up and a good outlook on life. Nobody can give you "so long to live." I really find that a depressing part of cancer treatment and care. I doubt that your expiry date is next month, any more than my chances of survival in 2015 were 20% at 5 years). Thanks for sharing your story so far. Keep happy and enjoy every minute.
