Breast lump and dent

Hi everyone,

This is my first time posting here, and I suppose I'm just looking for some reassurance.

Iv recently been referred for an urgent apt to the breast clinic as Iv found a lump on the side of my right breast. This has been there for quite a few weeks, however I had a baby 11 weeks ago so I just assumed this was due to a blocked milk duct or something postpartum related. However tbe other day I could see that the area directly above the lump looks to be dented. It's hardly visable in certain lighting but the more I look at it, the more obvious it looks. 

Now Im kicking myself for not getting the lump checked out sooner. 

Has anyone had anything like this and it turned out not to be cancer? As I am obviously thinking the worst.

    A very warm welcome to the forum and congratulations on the arrival of your new baby. The breasts do change after you've had a baby, so here's hoping that these changes are due to that and turn out to be nothing to worry about. I have had 2 bouts of cancer and 1 of pre-cancer, all within the first year of diagnosis. Not all lumps are cancerous. It is a fact that only 20% of those who attend the breast clinic get a cancer diagnosis. Although I have had 2 bouts, I have also been fortunate on other occasions to have a benign lump. It is impossible to predict what you have without having some simple tests at the breast clinic, which is why you've been referred.

    You should get your appointment through within 2 weeks from the date of referral, although the actual appointment can be a little further ahead than the 2 weeks. I do hope that nothing untoward is found. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Thank you for your reply. Sorry to hear abouts the bouts of cancer youve had, that must have been scary.

    My appointment is on 7th September and its just so difficult to keep my mind off it. I just keep thinking that if it is cancer, all this waiting its just spreading, which I know is silly. I'll try to keep myself busy until then.

    Hi Natalie,

    Nearly all of us worry about the possibility of spread while we're waiting. When you think about it logically, you've already left getting it investigated for quite a few weeks - another week is not likely to make much difference. Most of us are usually referred under the 2 week urgent pathway and the medics tell us that waiting for this amount of time is unlikely to affect the overall outcome. Even the thought of having cancer is scary, but, when faced with the reality, we just have to get on with it - it is certainly a challenge, but it is perfectly "doable".

    It shouldn't be too difficult to keep yourself busy with a new baby, but try to make some time for relaxation for yourself too. If you are finding it difficult to get out and about, many people find that even trying to concentrate on doing a jigsaw can help. Just a heads up - not everyone gets their results immediately. If the consultant decides to carry out a biopsy, it can take a further 1-3 weeks to get the results.
