CLog (part 5):
Your treatment will be a 6 week course involving daily Radiotherapy for 5 days per week and a weekly dose of Chemotherapy each Monday… how do you process this, so many people will have been in this position, it’s one of those points in your life which make time stand still, you try to take it all in, you have to take your support with you, your partner, friend or other family member and you have to walk out of that room and rationalise ‘it’ and so you talk about ‘it’ that’s how!
I think that it was the thought of Chemo that scared me the most, in my mind Chemotherapy has been the treatment I’ve read / heard about in the past that has been brutal. I was told that in my case, the Chemo adds just a 6-7% improvement to the success of the overall treatment, it’s clearly the Radiotherapy that does the heavy lifting.
With Chemo you’re in the chair for anything between 4 & 6 hours. You have a cannula fitted, then you take an initial 20 minutes of meds, followed by 2 hours of fluids, then an hour of Chemo and a final 30 minute fluid and you’re done… the sad thing is, there are around 20 chairs in the 2 rooms where Chemo is being administered, plus side wards, all full of people going through different phases of their “C” journey, a very moving place… as I mentioned in my little tribute to my Dad 11 years ago when he lost his battle with Prostate “C”, ‘Cancer you are a ***’.
Radiotherapy is completely different… you’re pinned to the bed, literally, and you’re laid there for around 6 minutes, which includes a CT scan and the treatment, done, you just have to go through this 30 times.
In a future CLog we’ll look at the side effects, feeding and managing your body. The next CLog will be looking at Genetics and why you could say, I’ve been lucky.
On a side note, my eldest daughter Emma is taking part in a fundraiser for CRUK this weekend and under the circumstances, why wouldn’t I try to help her… I know that I’ve asked a lot in the past for Charity with the events that I’ve organised and taken part in, but this is slightly different… isn’t it? Please help if you are able??
