Taboo - vulva cancer

Hi

I'm 59 yes young and had a diagnosis of LS roughly 10yrs ago after a colposcopy for something else. I was told I had it but then kept bad left in the dark. I never got regular flares or discomfort but I did end up with lots of fusing. I have battled with under active thyroid since my 20s and hassimoto auto immune. Part of me thinks this is linked with LS and auto immune and been unlucky.anyone else have auto immune conditions? . Anyway I had vin 3 surgery 3 years ago. And today in another area had wide local incision got invasive vulva cancer . Poss 1b. MRI showed no spread.

It is such a taboo subject due to the location and that is the part I struggle with. And only confided in a select few. I hope in years to come it is spoken of more freely especially to educate others. I wish the very best to you all in your journeys . X

  • Hello Maychic

I'm sorry to hear that, after many years of living with LS, you've recently been told you now have vulval cancer. I'm sure that it wasn't the news that you had hoped to hear at your appointment, but it is positive to know that your MRI didn't raise any concerns about further spread. Hopefully, the team were able to offer you some reassurance about the next steps in your care.

You're right that there are many types of cancer that people feel uncomfortable talking about, and that sometimes they become almost a taboo topic. Sadly, this sometimes means that people don't realise that these types of cancer are possible, or they may leave it too late to seek help from their doctor because of shame or embarrassment. As you say, hopefully in years to come, by people speaking more openly about their diagnosis, these types of cancer will become less taboo.

In the meantime, I do hope that you have some family or friends that you feel able to confide in and that they can offer you support while you're going through this treatment. If it would help to chat with one of our nurses at any point, you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040 Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can.

    Sending my best wishes,
