JFK40.B.FAST - asbestos concerns

I worked as a store man labourer in Aerocrete Shore Road in the mid and late 70s and early eighties I unloaded 20 to forty ton lorries on a monthly basis, these were full of asbestos plumbing fittings, pipes ect,we were never given masks or equipment to protect our breathing because probably this was not an issue, asbestos was never discussed as doing damage to our lungs or breathing.I was a labourer, and was never informed of any such desise.anyway my problem is were would I even get tested for any lung cancer or something else.RELATED.

  • Hi JAKESNAKE,

As you were exposed to asbestos at work over a period of time, it's important that you talk to your GP about this if you haven't done so already so get in touch with your doctor and make sure you explain exactly what happened, what your work involved in the 70s and early 80s and mention the fact that you were never given masks at the time or any PPE and that you need an assessment for occupational asbestos exposure. So the first step really is to see your GP who will then decide whether it is worth referring you for any further tests.

I would also recommend you have a look at the HSE Asbestos FAQs and if you have any questions or wanted to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses, there is a free helpline you can ring on 0808 800 4040 - it is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

This is bound to make you a bit anxious and I hope that you can talk to a medical expert soon about your fears and worries relating to this prolonged asbestos exposure at work.

Other members of our community may have been in a similar place before and exposed to asbestos at work like you have been in the past and I hope that they will come along and share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,
